Evolve to host WWE Cruiserweight Classic Spotlight Matches

WWE.com

Evolve just dropped a boatload of matches for their July and August shows on our doorsteps in a brand spankin' new WWN Alerts, so let's pick 'em apart a little bit, shall we?

The big guns in the headline, of course, are the six WWE Cruiserweight Classic Spotlight Matches announced, all featuring wrestlers who are likely to make deep runs in the tournament by dint of their name value and wrestling acumen.

Evolve 64 (July 16th in Queens, New York)

Cedric Alexander vs. Johnny Gargano

TJ Perkins TJP vs. Zack Sabre, Jr.

Evolve 65 (July 17th in Melrose, Massachusetts)

Cedric Alexander vs. Tommaso Ciampa

Evolve 66 (August 19th in Joppa, Maryland)

Cedric Alexander vs. TJ Perkins TJP

Drew Gulak vs. Tony Nese

Evolve 67 (August 20th in Brooklyn, New York)

Cedric Alexander vs. Zack Sabre, Jr.

Cedric Alexander forms a strong through-line for these matches, naturally. The former Ring of Honor standout has a name to make for himself here and a slate of quality opponents to do so with, notably getting Tommaso Ciampa's only announced match thus far on these cards. The two have had a number of notable matches in ROH, including an excellent no disqualification match that saw the ring partially dismantled.

Alexander and Daily Thread Favorite Zack Sabre, Jr. are no strangers, either, having just met in a match for PWX that, well, you can go see for yourselves, since it's available free on the Highspots Wrestling Network for now.

Sabre has another rematch here as well, as he and TJP clashed at Evolve 46 in a technical wrestling clinic. Round two should be a hoot!

Finally, Tony Nese still has a lot to prove-- he made it into the Cruiserweight Classic by being the last man standing at Flashpoint, but he's still got plenty of Premier Athlete Brand stink to shake off, and going against Catch Point maestro Drew Gulak is a fine way to shower.

But wait, there's more

Evolve didn't just announced the CWC Spotlights, no sir. We've got some more matchups for Drew Galloway set, as he faces Drew Gulak at Evolve 64 and rematches Johnny Gargano at Evolve 65. I'm not sure what the venue in Melrose is like, but by god I hope they have somewhere to brawl to, or it might get messy.

And returning to Evolve once again for these dates is Darby Allin, most notable for having the coolest entrance music in Evolve and being chucked into a steel support pillar by Ethan Page. No word on his matchups but I'm looking forward to seeing him develop.

It doesn't stop there yet, either. They're playing coy for now and teasing it for this Friday's Alerts, simply saying "All we have to say for now is....HE'S BACK!!!"

Who's "he"? Logic dictates, given the proximity of Cruiserweight Classic tapings, that it's one of those gentlemen, so who could be back? Brian Kendrick? My personal choice, given that I've been pining for the dude to come back since DGUSA folded, Akira Tozawa? Kota Ibushi? Someone entirely out of left field? Regardless, I'm excited!

Also be sure to check out this week's WWN Freebie, Fred Yehi vs. Marty Scurll from Evolve 58, up on YouTube for a limited time only.

All together it makes for a really exciting summer of pro wrestling, folks.
