Tope 10: Lucha Underground (May 4, 2016)

Lucha Underground on Twitter

Each and every episode of Lucha Underground features maneuvers, quotes, outfits, props, scenes, and stories that deserve recognition. That is where the Tope 10 come in. This list shows appreciation for the moments which are more exciting than a flying tope.

If you are new to the Lucha Underground scene, you can catch it Wednesdays at 8pm ET/PT on the El Rey Network or buy season one and season two on iTunes. See if El Rey is available in your area. If you haven't had a chance to watch this week's episode yet, then check out the preview, live blog & open thread, recap, highlight package, and a true spectacle of a main event between Sexy Star and Mariposa in a No Más (I quit) match for an Aztec medallion.

10. Vampiro pumping up the crowd

A simple yet humorous moment of Vampiro once again getting caught up in being a fan. Vampiro is marching around in the background. You can see the tail end of his boisterousness in the GIF. It is moments like this that make Vampiro one of the more lovable announcers in the game today.

9. Famous B's custom coat

It's always nice to see a manager showing dedication to his client's career. B displayed this by having a design of Mascarita Sagrada emblazoned on the back of his blazer. Unfortunately for B, Cage tossed his client like a sack of potatoes. Tonight, yes? Tonight, no.

8. Marty creeping on Melissa

As the always wonderful Melissa Santos announced the presence of Marty Martinez, he was sticking closer to her than the bread on the meat of my sandwich. All the while flapping his arms and inhaling her aroma. She had to shoo him away during the Mack's entrance.

Later on, Marty removed his shirt in a sensual manner then an eye focus double finger lick before tossing his shirt at Melissa. Such a creep but also creepily entertaining.

7. Ooohhh, Chavo

Dario Cueto forced Chavo's hand to seize the opportunity after Cueto was done handing them to Chavo. Out of desperation, Chavo decided to steal Cage's medallion. Chavo is such a good heel on this show. Personally, I'm pulling for Chavo, but I have to say that I sure will enjoy how the crowd is going to love it when Cage rips Chavo limb from limb.

6. Graver Consequences

Hoss fight part two. Dario Cueto decided to up the stakes for the Matanza vs Mil Muertes rematch. Next week will be a coffin match for the Lucha Underground title. I'm not sure why there needs to be four coffins, but soon we shall see. They must have something outrageous planned for Graver Consequences. To whet your appetite, relive in all its glory the original Grave Consequences match between Mil Muertes and Fenix.

The announcement was great, but Dario Cueto's facial expressions carried the segment to the next level. Smugness to bad heartburn to laughing at Catrina's threat. To top it off, he sneaked a peak at Catrina's backside as she exited his office.

5. Like a house afire

The Mack came blazing right out of the gate as he took it to Marty. He didn't even get his jacket off before his first attack. Once he did, he emphatically threw it down into Marty's face. That set the heated tone for the match, which included a suplex trio of vertical to northern to German, an exploder suplex into the turnbuckle by Marty, and a whirling fireman's carry stunner by Mack.

4. Pep talk

The Sexy Star/Mariposa feud hadn't been featured enough to carry any momentum. This segment perfectly brought back the fire to the main event. Before, I was lukewarm. After, I was raring to go see the match.

3. Below the belt

In one of the more creative uses of a foreign object that I have ever seen, Sexy Star smashed a chair into Mariposa's mariposa.

Sexy Star and Mariposa made great use of the Temple in their match. Chairs, trash cans, climbing, and hanging on for dear life. That sense of danger truly elevated the match to make it feel like a genuine, and literal, blood feud. They went from pillar to post to put on one heck of a performance. Quadruple thumbs up to them.

2. Boyle Heights swinging

Vicious. Bringing back memories of Cesaro and Miz also made it delicious.

1. With great vengeance and furious anger

Caught in a dangerous submission, Sexy Star exploded into the microphone, "Fuck you! Fuck you, Mariposa. Fuck you!!!" Totally unexpected and totally awesome. A tremendous display of emotion. It made me stand up and cheer for Sexy Star. I can't help but get an adrenaline boost whenever I see defiance in the face of fear. Sexy quickly slapped on a submission of her own for, "No más." It was one of the more satisfying victories for a babyface in recent memory.

In last week's poll, 27% of 172 votes crowned El Dragon Azteca Jr. as the show stealer. Cage earned 17% in a cage to best Johnny Mundo (16%) one more time. Despite Jack Evans' claim, Ivelisse was badder as she came in fourth place (12%), while Evans finished in fifth (10%).

How does this week's Tope 10 stack up to your list? Any favorites not included? If you were late to the viewing party, feel free to share your thoughts about anything in the episode. While waiting for next week, check out El Dragon Azteca Jr. sharing his thoughts on his championship partners.
