AJ Styles NOT pulled from weekend house shows again due to ankle injury

AJ Styles

UPDATE: Mike Johnson at PWInsider has corrected his report, saying it was based on outdated information. Styles is in Utica and set to appear on both shows this weekend heading into Extreme Rules.

For the second weekend in a row, the #1 contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will not be appearing at non-televised events, according to PWInsider.

AJ Styles missed last week's SmackDown (taped, May 10 and broadcast on May 12) and the subsequent live events on May 13 - 15. It was initially believed to be due to back issues which pre-date his signing with WWE, but he later revealed it to be an ankle issue.

He would go on to see action on both Raw and SmackDown this week, and the report makes clear he will not miss Sunday's Extreme Rules pay-per-view (PPV), where he's set to face the champ, Roman Reigns, in an extreme rules match.

The Phenomenal One was advertised for shows in Utica, New York and Reading, Pennsylvania heading into Sunday's event in Newark, New Jersey, but will skip those to rest the ankle - and any other lingering injuries on his well-traveled, nearly 38 year old frame.

No word on if he'll be replaced on those live shows, or if the card will just be re-adjusted to account for his absence.
