WWE SmackDown preview (May 12, 2016): Acceptable losses

WWE on Instagram

Tonight's episode of SmackDown was filmed on Tuesday night in Des Moines. We've got a spoiler report for you here. If you just want to get ready for the show without knowing who wins and loses, read on!

The Headliner

Super-siblings Shane & Stephanie had a Triple Threat Intercontinental title match all lined for Extreme Rules, but Sami Zayn offered to fight his way in by taking on The Miz in non-title action. The new era, as we all know, is all about new opportunities, so the McMahon's couldn't say no to that.

Much to Maryse's dismay, Zayn would win that match, and the next pay-per-view (PPV) is now set to be a Fatal 4Way for the strap. And since two of the men in that match are good guys, and two of them aren't, SmackDown is the place for tag action.

So tonight, Sami & Cesaro will face Kevin Owens & Miz. And I'm sure everything will go great.

The Title Scene

The May 22 show will also feature a rematch between WWE World Heavyweight champ Roman Reigns and AJ Styles. And since it seems impossible for either those two or their friends & relatives to wrestle one another these days without everyone else getting involved, the Big Dog and the Phenomenal One have been banned from ringside tonight for the Usos match with Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows. Somehow, I imagine the tension will rise between Roman & AJ even if they manage to stay out of the ring.

Women's titleist Charlotte is familiar with having family banned from ringside. Her next go-round with Natalya for her belt will be without her father, Ric Flair, by her side. He was also barred from her non-title match against Paige on Raw, and lost - but that was more because his attempts to get to the match were distracting.

She wasn't the only titleholder who lost on Monday. Well, obviously, since we already talked about Miz's loss, but the Dudley Boyz took out tag team champions The New Day the only way they can - in a match with the belt not on the line. They also got an assist from #1 contenders the Vaudevillains, and Aiden English & Simon Gotch hit their finisher on poor Kofi Kingston, too.

The United States titleholder didn't lose, but only because he wasn't in a match. And because he acted more heelishly than his upcoming challenger, Rusev - a man who has threatened to eat Kalisto's heart.  The champ's Lucha Dragon partner, Sin Cara, scored a win thanks to Kalisto... they're running the same match tonight.

Other stuff to keep an eye on:

- Always the underdog, Becky Lynch has found the odds even more stacked against her than normal thanks Dana Brooke arriving to re-team with her rival Emma. Tonight, the Killer Barbie and the Lasskicker take it to the ring.

- Potted plants, expensive coats and an official main event for Colin Cassady have been sacrificed in the feud between Dean Ambrose & Chris Jericho. What's next when the Lunatic Fringe gets a mic at the top of tonight's show?

- The Gorgeous Truth. The Golden Dance. Something's got to give. Find out what on SmackDown.

- Bob Backlund is making Darren Young great again. For what, we're not sure.

(Note: I know some folks have come looking for a more definitive match listing - that will be posted behind spoiler text in the comments. If WWE.com releases more information on anything that's officially going to take place on tonight's show, that'll be updated here)

See you tonight for SmackDown!
