This Day in Wrestling History (Mar. 22): Beer Bath!

35 years ago today in Greensboro, North Carolina, Paul Jones and The Masked Superstar defeated Ray Stevens and Ivan Koloff to win the NWA World Tag Team Championship.

17 years ago today on RAW is WAR from Albany, New York (WWE Network link), one of RAW's greatest moments occurred: in the show's opening segment, Stone Cold Steve Austin arrived to the show in a Coors Light beer truck and sprayed The Corporation's Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon, and WWF Champion The Rock with beer. In a 2012 list, the moment was ranked the greatest in RAW history.

In the show's main event, Austin defeated "The Big Show" Paul Wight in Wight's WWF in-ring debut.

12 years ago today at ROH Night of the Champions in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Samoa Joe defeated Xavier by submission to win the ROH Championship. Samoa Joe would hold the championship for the next 21 months, longer than the next three champions (Austin Aries, CM Punk, and James Gibson) AND the two men before him (Low Ki and Xavier) by a wide margin-- 645 days in all if you're wondering.

12 years ago today, WWE held its first ever Draft Lottery on RAW from the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan.

RAW and Smackdown's general managers, Eric Bischoff and Paul Heyman respectively, each had a bin with the other show's roster, and they each picked six names from their bins. Any name picked out would be moved.

Shelton Benjamin, Nidia, Rhyno, Edge (making his return to WWE after more than a year away from the ring), Tajiri and Paul Heyman  were moved to RAW. Heyman decided that he'd rather not work at all than work for Eric Bischoff, so he quit. Drafted to Smackdown were Rene Dupree, Mark Jindrak, Triple H, Rob Van Dam, Teddy Long and Spike Dudley. Triple H would never appear in a Smackdown ring as he was traded the next day back to RAW for Booker T and the Dudley Boyz.

  • Chris Jericho defeated Rene Dupree.
  • Kane defeated Rico in just 27 seconds.
  • Christian defeated Spike Dudley.
  • Batista & Ric Flair defeated Booker T & Rob Van Dam to win the World Tag Team Championship.
  • Chris Benoit defeated Rhyno to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.
  • Eddie Guerrero defeated Triple H by disqualification to retain the WWE Championship. The match ended with a locker room clearing brawl.

6 years ago today on TNA Impact, Jeff Jarrett defeated Mick Foley in a no disqualification career versus career match. With the loss, Foley was fired from TNA. On his way out, he bloodies Bubba the Love Sponge's nose. As it turned out, Foley wasn't fired from TNA; it was just a way to get him off TV as they were quickly running up on the contracted number of dates Foley could work. Mick would return four months later.

5 years ago today at a Smackdown taping in Columbus, Ohio, Wade Barrett defeated Kofi Kingston to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship.
