President Trump: Putting Butts in Seats

I typically try to avoid bringing up serious things like politics here at Cageside Seats, because I love that we can all have a smart, engaging, and honest conversation about something ultimately low stakes like wrestling, and not the stuff that really cuts deep. But I've also been a little bit bummed about the mainstream media's failure to draw a great many comparisons between our current Presidential election cycle and our favorite fake sport so I'm happy to direct your attention to Matt Taibbi's wonderful and fascinating new piece in Rolling Stone.

Needless to say, any completely serious and well informed and considered political news article that cross-cuts Donald Trump's campaign antics with classic videos of Rick Rude is something we pro graps fans can get a little excited about, but even beyond the superficial comparisons Taibbi makes, I think you'll notice some very interesting parallels between the manner in which political candidates, Trump in particular, are characterized as relating to the population through media and how WWE likes to push it's talent.

On that note, Taibbi's dissection of the manner in which many Americans have flocked to Trump's bandwagon in revolt against same-old-same-old establishment cooperation between Washington and the media has its share of parallels to WWE's current struggles to get over would-be top guys like Roman Reigns. My own real world anxieties over the specter of his election aside, I can't be the only Cagesider considering the possibility that neither Roman, nor Dean, nor Daniel Bryan is The Guy; but maybe another WrestleMania guest spot will make it clear that President Trump was The Guy all along!

I'll gently encourage the rest of you here at Cageside to keep your thoughts to the wrestling-related aspects of this phenomenon, as I think we all want to maintain the friendly and collaborative atmosphere Geno and crew have created around these parts, but I thought the piece had a unique resonance for us s/marks, and felt compelled to offer it to the community.
