Just this weekend, Producer Mark Burnett was talking about Lucha Underground's growth plans. Two things he mentioned were a "second window" where fans could view episodes after they ran on El Rey Network (a la DVD or a streaming service) and live events outside of the Los Angeles "Temple" where they shoot the series.
And, voila, today we find out LU will be holding a live show at the annual SxSW festival in Austin, Texas next month!
The three hour show will take place at the Austin Music Hall on Tueday, March 15. Start time is listed as 8PM Central. Best of all, it's free!
Attention Austin Believers - El Rey Network's addictive, lucha libre wrestling series is coming to SXSW for a live event, bringing the blood-pumping, chant-starting, fierce lucha libre drama and excitement to Austin as the masked heroes and villains battle it out for wrestling supremacy. Join some of your favorite Lucha Underground wrestlers and experience the high flying action first hand as the blood pumping event leaves its LA Temple and invades Austin for one night only. We have a limited number of seats set aside just for fans. This RSVP does not guarantee admission and credentials must be picked up in advance.
South by Southwest (SxSW) used to be a series of shows in Texas' state capital, a live music Mecca, for bands trying to break out which occurred each Spring. Over time, it's morphed into a brand of pop culture and technology events that sees the entertainment and business worlds converge on Austin for a couple weeks every year.
That's why seats are free, and limited, as El Rey (based in founder Robert Rodriguez's home town) and other players behind the show will be using the date as a way to build investment and buzz for their product for things like future seasons, more distribution options and touring.
It's also why SxSW makes a ton of sense for their first show outside of Boyle Heights, as it's exactly the venue to continue to build the brand as hot, trendy, cool and not your parents' pro wrestling.
Register now, Austinites and festival goers - and be sure to send us a report, you lucky bastiches.
