This Day in Wrestling History (Dec. 20): nWo 2000 Forms

this day in wrestling history

19 years ago today in Middletown, New York, the Eliminators (John Kronus & Perry Saturn) defeat The Gangstas (New Jack & Mustafa) to win the ECW World Tag Team Championship.

17 years ago today on Nitro from Baltimore, Maryland (WWE Network link), Bret Hart vacates the WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

Later in the show, Jeff Jarrett defeated Chris Benoit in a ladder match to win the WCW United States Championship.

In the show’s main event, Hart defeated Goldberg to win the vacated WCW World Heavyweight Championship.

The match stems from a Montreal Screwjob-esque ending the previous night at Starrcade. Hart was given the match to "right the wrong" from the previous night. The Outsiders (Scott Hall & Kevin Nash) interfered on behalf of Hart.

Post-match, Jarrett attacked Roddy Piper, then spray painted the familiar letters "nWo" on Goldberg's back. The band was back together, with the reincarnated New World Order holding the top three championships in WCW.

13 years ago today, WWE presented Christmas from Baghdad (WWE Network link) from Camp Victory in Baghdad.

Retroactively called Tribute to the Troops in the years since its original airing, the show aired as a special edition of Smackdown on Christmas night. The show has been presented annually for the US military ever since.

  • The Acolytes defeated Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin.
  • Rikishi defeated Rhyno.
  • Eddie Guerrero defeated Chris Benoit.
  • Torrie Wilson defeated Dawn Marie and Sable in a Santa's Little Helper outfit contest.
  • John Cena defeated Big Show.

7 years ago today, TNA presented Final Resolution from the Impact Zone at Universal Orlando.

  • The British Invasion (Brutus Magnus & Doug Williams) defeated The Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelley & Chris Sabin) to retain the TNA World Tag Team Championship.
  • Tara defeated ODB to win the TNA Knockouts Championship.
  • Sheik Abdul Bashir, Big Rob, Kevin Nash, and Samoa Joe each won a Feast or Fired case. Other participants in the match were Cody Deaner, Consequences Creed, Eric Young, Homicide, James Storm, Jay Lethal, Kiyoshi, and Robert Roode. In a side note, this would be the last Feast or Fired match until 2013.
  • Big Rob won an X Division Championship match, but was forced to give it to Doug Williams a few weeks later. Williams went on to win the X Division Championship. Kevin Nash won a Tag Team Championship match and would win the TNA World Tag Team titles in May 2010. Samoa Joe won a TNA World Heavyweight Championship match. He used his shot for the Against All Odds PPV in February, but AJ Styles retained the title. Sheik Abdul Bashir was fired. No, really. He pretty much was, despite signing a new deal with TNA. When Jeff Jarrett stepped down from running the company, Bashir asked for and was granted his release.
  • D'Angelo Dinero, Hernandez, Matt Morgan, and Suicide defeated Jesse Neal, Rhino, Rhino, and Team 3D (Brother Devon and Brother Ray) in an 4-3 in an elimination tag team match.
  • Bobby Lashley defeated Scott Steiner in a Last Man Standing match.
  • Abyss & Mick Foley defeated Dr. Stevie & Raven in a Foley's House of Fun tag team match.
  • Kurt Angle defeated Desmond Wolfe 2-1 in a Three Degrees of Pain match. Desmond Wolfe won a pinfalls only match, but Angle defeated Wolfe in both a submissions only match and a steel cage match to win.
  • AJ Styles defeated Daniels to retain the TNA World Heavyweight Championship.
