WWE NXT preview (Nov. 9, 2016): Final frontier

NXT’s Instagram

It’s the fourth show from Oct. 13’s taping at Full Sail (spoilers from which are here) - with a little California tour mixed in (results here) as NXT finishes building toward TakeOver: Toronto. Here's what to expect.

The Headliner(s)

A lot has happened since Shinsuke Nakamura won the NXT championship from Samoa Joe in Brooklyn. For one thing, Joe feigned good sportsmanship as a way to attack the King of Strong Style and put him out of action for more than a month (kayfabe time).

After a couple weeks of holding the WWE Network show hostage, Joe thought a banged up and neck brace-wearing Nakamura was returning to hand over the belt - or at least fight at less than 100%. Turns out Shinsuke was way ahead of Joey Headrocker, and battled his way through security, Patrick Clark and whatever else stood between him and Joe.

General Manager William Regal gave them what they wanted - a rematch in Toronto. To make that official, he’ll have to get them to sign some paperwork without killing each other tonight. The odds of that going smoothly aren’t good, but, hey, it’s pro wrestling. We’ve got to give it a shot.

The Title Scene

She knows who’ll be challenging for her Women’s title on Nov. 19, but Asuka hasn’t met Mickie James face-to-face yet. Will that change this week, or will NXT spend some more time aquainting newer members of the WWE Universe to the former main roster champ?

#DIY has their sights set on winning the Dusty Classic, and they’ll try to move one step closer to that goal when they face Paul Ellering’s newest monsters, the Authors of Pain, tonight. But they also want to take the tag team championship away from The Revival. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa were not pleased when Dash & Dawson used an injury to back out of their scheduled tournament match. Can the former indie stars focus on Akam & Rezar, or will they be distracted by the mental games of the Revival?

Other stuff to keep an eye on:

- Like last week, NXT is fast-forwarding straight to the action - we’re getting both Dusty semis tonight. In the other bracket, Eric Young & Nikki Cross will try to help keep their SAnitY teammates Alexander Wolfe & Sawyer Fulton in the win column when they face TM-61 for a spot in the finals at TakeOver.

- Finally addressing a plot thread from round one, Cedric Alexander called out Andrade “Cien” Almas for attacking him as part of the luchador’s heel turn... so hopefully we’ll get that match soon

- With his buddy Austin Aries on the shelf following surgery to repair the “broken eye-hole” Nakamura gave him, it’s up in the air what recent signee Roderick Strong’s first big WWE angle might be.

- As hyped as we are for Asuka/Mickie, here’s hoping we re-visit some of the other women... whether that’s more of Nikki with SAnitY, or advancing the Peyton Royce & Billie Kay vs. Liv Morgan program, or something for Ember Moon to do, or...

NOTE: Spoilers are out there for these pre-taped broadcasts (including here), but many Cagesiders don't partake. If you are going to post or discuss spoilers for this show before they happen, or results of future shows, please use the spoiler bar in your comment.
