WWN promised us a big week of announcements and our second one just clattered down the tracks!
Style Battle, the long-time Evolve tournament staple featuring a clash of differing wrestling styles and won this year by Matt Riddle and in previous years by the likes of Timothy Thatcher (2014), Drew Gulak (2013), Jon Davis (2012), and AR Fox (2011), is being spun out into its own promotion on FloSlam.
Unlike the most recent incarnations of the tournament, contested as four-man, three-day round robin matches, the new Style Battle will go back to its roots as a eight-man single elimination tournament taking place in a single night. But with a new twist— Style Battle will be fought in seasons, nine events a year, with the winners of the first eight (or appropriate “all-star” substitutions if necessary) meeting in the ninth to crown the Style Battle Champion for the year.
Further details, including the talent roster and the overall schedule, have yet to be announced, but the first tournament will take place January 7 in Ybor City, Florida, creating a double header weekend with the first new-look FIP show, Everything Burns, the next day.
Style Battle has been one of the highlights of Evolve’s year just about every time it’s happened, folks, and I’m super excited to see it happen on a near-monthly basis like this. Who doesn’t love a tournament?
