NXT TakeOver: Toronto results: Samoa Joe defeats Shinsuke Nakamura to become the first two-time NXT champion

The King of Strong Style has been dethroned.

In the main event of TakeOver: Toronto from the Air Canada Centre, Shinsuke Nakamura defended his NXT against Samoa Joe.

This was a rematch from the main event of TakeOver: Brooklyn where Shinsuke defeated Joe to win the title. This enraged the former champion, who brutally attacked Nakamua a couple weeks later, keeping him off TV for weeks. The champ returned full of fire and this match was on.

To top his entrance last time when he had a violinist play him to the ring, Nakamura came out with a gaggle of violinists. (The jury is out if they were actually playing.) To top his entrance last time, Samoa Joe walked to the ring with an even less nonsense.

The earlier portion of the match was back and forth, inside and out. Until this:

Joe then took charge, working the leg of the champ. But you can’t keep a good man down as Nakamura came back and unleash his own style of stiff offense on Joe. The challenger then used his own specialty: A series of submissions to wear down the champ.

The men then started trading big moves until Shinsuke fired up and had his best offensive showing against the Samoan. However, the ever savvy Joe went back to the knees and set up the Muscle Buster. The champ was able to slide out and nail his Kinshasa knee. The champ wasn’t able to get a strong cover and the challenger kicked out.

The second Kinshasa was reversed in the Coquina Clutch and then a series of devastating suplexes that was not enough to put the champ away.

Nakamura was able to hit a Kinshasa to the back of the head that knocked Joe out of the ring. However, when the champ followed Joe outside, he ended up getting a low blow from Joe that the ref did not see. Joe followed up with a uranage to the ring steps, and the the Muscle Buster back in the ring. That was enough to keep the King of Strong Style down for the three count and earned Samoa Joe his second NXT title.

It was a surprising ending (none of our Cageside predictors called it) that left the crowd stunned.
