Tope 10: Lucha Underground (Oct 26, 2016)

Lucha Underground on Instagram

Each and every episode of Lucha Underground features maneuvers, quotes, outfits, props, scenes, and stories that deserve recognition. That is where the Tope 10 comes in. This list shows appreciation for the moments which are more exciting than a flying tope.

If you are new to the Lucha Underground scene, you can catch it Wednesdays at 8pm ET/PT on the El Rey Network or buy seasons one, two, and three on iTunes. See if El Rey is available in your area.

If you haven't had a chance to watch this week's episode yet, check out the preview, live blog & open thread, recap, highlight package, and the Gift of the Gods championship main event between Sexy Star and Johnny Mundo.

Bonus news if you haven't yet heard. Lucha Underground will be continuing their mini tour with live dates in Houston and San Diego. Drago vs Johnny Mundo in a nunchuck match and Cage vs Matanza are the feature bouts of the Houston show on Sunday, October 30.

10. Taking a bite out of the competition

I sure wasn't expecting Mariposa to attempt a cannibalistic chomp. We all know Marty is a creepy one, but it seems Mariposa isn't all there either. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise since Sexy Star was more scared of Mariposa than Marty. There must have been a disturbing reason for that.

I like where this feud is heading. I can see it culminating in a main event war between the Moth siblings against Ivelisse and Jeremiah. Maybe that will be the time when I finally get my Son of Havoc as Miss Elizabeth moment as he comes to Ivelisse's aid.

9. Johnny Mundo flipping the bird

During Mundo's entrance, he was going to give his shades to a fan. Mundo changed his mind and gave the middle finger instead. Quality heeling.

And of course, Mundo is the kind of guy that sticks his thumb out when giving the middle finger. Such a jabrone. The thumb takes away from the emphasis of the middle finger. I don't know if sticking out the thumb is frowned upon in all areas of the world, but it has been that way with most people I've known.

8. Brass knuckles

Such a scumbag move, but enjoyable nonetheless due to Johnny Mundo's celebratory goofiness. Just when you think you have the answers for Johnny's antics, he pulls another trick out of his sleeve.

7. Small package

The small package victory was an unexpected change of pace in a rough-and-tumble match that featured a fallaway slam without the fallaway, a superplex, plus several other slobberknocking maneuvers.

6. Grave Consequences 3?

The scene with Prince Puma and Vampiro had good story progression, however, the real winning element for me was the set up to a potential Grave Consequences match. I love the idea of Puma vs Mil in Grave Consequences. It should be bonkers.

As fantastic as the match might be, Mil needs to win. He can't go 0-for-3 in Grave Consequences and still retain his badass mystique. How many times is Catrina going to have to revive Mil from the dead? If Mil wins, does that mean the end of Prince Puma? I could see it happening at Ultima Lucha Tres, but not in the middle of the season. If Prince Puma vs Mil Muertes in Grave Consequences does take place, the ramifications will certainly be intriguing.

Side thought: What will they call the third edition of Grave Consequences? Graverer Consequences? Gravest Consequences would seem to imply that it would be the last one. How can you top gravest? I'm partial to Gravy Consequences. They can have the match during Thanksgiving week.

5. Dario Cueto's reaction to Loser Leaves Lucha

Rey Mysterio came into Dario's office with the intent to ask a favor. Rey is tired of dealing with Chavo Guerrero's bullshit. That GIF only shows part of Dario's reaction. Dario began with a smile creeping across his face at the anticipation of Rey's request. After the GIF, Dario did his finger twirling mannerism as he listened intently. Then his face wrinkled like a smiling Shar Pei as he granted Rey the main event match for next week; Rey vs Chavo in a Loser Leaves Lucha match.

4. "Ferris wheel crucifixion"

A fun looking move that made me go, "Wheeeee." Credit to Matt Striker for the name.

3. Apron powerbomb

Oooooooffffffffffff. That one made me cringe. The thud against the floor was... oooooooffffffffffff.

2. The Mack!

Worldwide Underground had Sexy Star placed in a precarious position. At that time, Mack hit the scene to make the odds more even.

I became a big fan of Mack when he assisted Sexy Star in her quest for vengeance against the Moths. I enjoyed him before, but I never had a reason to care about him. Teaming with Sexy Star gave me the reason I needed. Whenever Sexy has been trouble this season, I've always been rooting for an appearance from Mack instead of her trio of super friends. This moment allowed me to release an impassioned, "Yeah," for Mack to kick butt.

I hope this leads to us getting Mack vs Johnny Mundo. Preferably without any interference. That match would be dope if they let the two go at it and put on a show.

1. The next host body?!?

Dario Cueto entered a limousine to speak with Councilman Delgado. Delgado started off, "His descension is now complete." Cueto replied, "Soon the gods will be reunited, and then no one can stop us." Delgado inquired, "Have you chosen the next host body?" Delgado handed over a mysterious chest, and that's when we found out what Dario plans on giving the winner of the series between Cage and Texano.

Add another to the list of mind blowing moments in Lucha Underground. It sends my mind wandering into all sorts of crazy possibilities. So, if Cage turns out to literally be a machine, will the host body transfer work? It looks like I now have a reason to root for Cage to win the ultimate opportunity, so we can find that out and also if Cage truly is a machine. This show gets wackier and wackier, and I love it.

In last week's poll, Fenix proved to be the fan favorite of the Trios championship team with 45% of 105 votes. Dragon-man Drago took in 36%, while Aerostar tallied 19%.

How does this week's Tope 10 stack up to your list? Any favorites not included? If you were late to the viewing party, feel free to share your thoughts about anything in the episode. While waiting for next week, check out a couple of masked lucha kitties and some cool luchador fantasy artwork featuring ghouls and robots.
