The next pay-per-view (PPV) on the WWE schedule is the Night of Champions show set to take place on Sun., Sept. 20, 2015, at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. This is the ninth annual event in the chronology of the gimmick show that features every title in the promotion being put up for grabs.
We're just a week away from showtime, and the card's gotten a lot more interesting since we last checked in seven days ago...
- Seth Rollins vs. Sting (WWE world heavyweight championship)
When The Authority was going to give the champ his own statue, the Stinger crashed the party. Then, he told everyone he wants to accomplish his final career goal of winning the WWE world title while also proving that Rollins isn't as good as Triple H.
Now, the Icon has continued his mind games and destroyed Seth's beloved statue, an act for which The Architect has vowed revenge. The biggest mind game of all might be the rumor that this match won't go on last, instead playing second fiddle to...
- Seth Rollins vs. John Cena (US championship)
The former champion demanded his rematch and Stephanie McMahon decided to give it to him. Other than standing shoulder-to-shoulder with The Vigilante and picking up a pin on 1/3 of the tag champs in a six-man that also featured Rollins, rumors about match order and inventory of Cena merchandise have been the most compelling developments in this feud over the past week.
- Nikki Bella vs. Charlotte (Divas championship)
This was booked after Charlotte won a Beat-the-Clock Challenge...but having it happen on the PPV would be after Nikki broke AJ Lee's record for longest run with the butterfly belt. So The Nature Girl petitioned The Authority to have it tomorrow on Raw's "season premiere", and a match was made for Sept. 14 in Memphis.
According to Michael Cole, Bella still goes into the record books, but Charlotte could make it so that she only ties Lee with a victory. Meanwhile, the bout is listed for Night of Champions still, so expect to see this one twice next week. The question is, how many clean finishes will we get?
- The Dudley Boyz vs. the winner of The New Day & PrimeTime Players
This one is not on the show's website yet, but was announced last Monday night. Current tag champs Big E, Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods (Freebird!) will have to defend their belts on Raw, when the former titleholders Titus O'Neil & Darren Young get their rematch. Whoever holds the copper pennies after that gets Bubba Ray, D-Von and presumably some tables on PPV.
- Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns & MYSTERY PARTNER vs. The Wyatt Family
With our title tilts out of the way (still waiting for Ryback's Intercontinental championship opponent to be made official, but the build indicates it will be Kevin Owens), this is one of two grudge matches on the show.
Bray Wyatt's been stalking The Big Dog for months now, even recruiting Luke Harper back to the Family to counteract Roman's brotherhood with his former Shield-mate Dean. When they fell at SummerSlam, however, he unveiled his "black sheep" the monstrous former strongman Braun Strowman.
With Strowman at their side, the Wyatts have been manhandling Reigns, Ambrose and whoever comes to their side. Who will step up to round out the six-man in Houston?
- Rusev vs. Dolph Ziggler
Though he still doesn't have a decisive victory in the wrestling portion of this soap opera, The Bulgarian Brute is playing video games and frolicking on the beach with Hot Summer while The Show-Off tries to convince the injured Lana he's not a tramp.
It's RuRu's world, y'all.
