Tournament marks, rejoice!
Continuing to establish the brand as a place where fans can get things they won't find on main roster shows like Raw and SmackDown, General Manager William Regal announced on Saturday night's TakeOver: Brooklyn broadcast on WWE Network that NXT will hold a tag team tournament over the coming months.
The finals will be held on October 7 in a live broadcast of the next TakeOver special. No dates have been announced for that month except for the music festivals NXT will be working on weekends in Kentucky and California at the start and end of October, respectively, so this live Wednesday event will presumably be back at Full Sail Live.
Details are sparse, except for the finals date and the tourney's name...The Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic. An unannounced number of teams from "NXT's past, present and future" will compete to be named the winners of the inaugural Rhodes Classic. How the NXT tag team championship, captured this weekend in New York by The Vaudevillains, factors into things is also not discussed in the announcement - which you can read on WWE.com here.
Will three-quarters of their most famous women having been called up to the main roster, focusing on pairs is another way for the feeder system's promotion to stand out from the main roster product, where tag wrestling is often even more of an afterthought than the Divas. In addition to the new champs, former titleholders Blake & Murphy, Enzo & Cass (if they aren't called up soon) and Hype Bros are already established, and newer acts like Chad Gable & Jason Jordan and The Mechanics, make up a pretty stacked division.
Plus, the "past" teams mention would mean squads that have been called up without making much of a splash on the main shows, like The Ascension, Lucha Dragons and maybe even Big E & Xavier Woods of The New Day, could be invited back for the fun.
We'll let you know more about when the action starts, and who'll be taking part, as soon as we find out, Cagesiders.
What do you think of the announcement? Smart move for NXT? Good way to honor The American Dream?
