John Cena Right There With Ric Flair and Hulk Hogan

The pantheon makes room for a new member, even as Cena excels in the present day. Plus, Week 18 of the Wrestler Wrankings!

John Cena has ridden his "US Open Challenge" series to both critical acclaim and an avalanche of victories. As such, he finds himself in a very impressive third place in the Wrestler Wrankings, behind only Neville and World's Champion, Seth Rollins.

Resting atop the his pile of well deserved accolades is Cena's remarkable title defense this past Monday, where Cena rose above a broken nose (in addition to hate) to defeat Seth Rollins. Injuries such as the one Cena suffered are rare in professional wrestling, even while knees as vicious as Rollins' are commonplace. The reason for this seems clear, John Cena leaves it all in the ring, every damn time. Unfortunately that can result in also leaving his nose on the side of his face.

As the old saying goes, if you listen to enough Hulk Hogan sex tapes, you'll soon hear the n-word. Likewise, if you wrestle as hard as John Cena does on a weekly basis, you're bound to get your beak busted.

John Cena is now unquestionably the greatest wrestler of his generation. Randy Orton is sublime but too often underwhelming (as he was against Kevin Owens this week). Other contemporaries have had their moments, but ultimately come up lacking. Be it durability (Daniel Bryan), temperament (Batista), desire (Brock Lesnar), or tolerance (CM Punk), each man comes up short.

The conversation can now shift to the most rarified air of all. Cena is staring eye to eye with the Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair as the greatest professional wrestlers in history. Will injuries derail Cena's train to singular immortality as they did with Steve Austin? Perhaps Hollywood will continue to court the Cenation leader as happened with Rock. Either way, the mantle of Greatest of All Time is within Cena's grasp.

Winning the 2015-16 Wrestler Wrankings would certainly help his case. I, for one, will continue to root for him.
