A story about how Smarks vote, or, OWENSWINSLOL

Everybody who comes to Cageside Seats has an opinion about what's going on in pro wrestling - The Smark's Shoot Standings (S3) are where YOU let us know YOURS.

Cast a vote in the comments. Give us the four performers you think entertained or impressed the most in the last week, and feel free to talk about why. And/or vote for your top performer in our poll.

We also have the outcome of last week's voting, the results of which make up our annual competition for Performer of the Year.

Remember, the Standings are for the previous week's nationally televised and internet streaming pro wrestling shows - TNA's Slammiversary pay-per-view (PPV), the June 29 episode of WWE Monday Night Raw, Wednesday's ROH TV, Lucha Underground, WWE NXT &TNA ImpactThursday's WWE SmackDown, the WWE Network-exclusive Beast in the East and any other internet streaming wrestling that aired from June 28 - July 4.

Make YOUR mark, smarks!

Part III of the "Zoo Enthusiast" phase

of The S3 reign of Kevin Owens.

In lieu of the usual bullet points (that probably nobody reads anyway), a little behind the scenes story of life with The S3. Somewhere between Thursday afternoon and Saturday night, I pull up last week's post and open my spreadsheets and get to tabulating.

This used to be a ridiculously easy task. In fact, for much of the first couple of years of doing this, it was more common for me to worry about if there would be ten different performers receiving votes than anything else.

With the growth of the site, it's become more work - but also a lot more fun & interesting. Wrestlers with vote/point totals that would have won weeks in the early days now finish outside of the top ten.

I do the poll votes first, and while that has largely been a good barometer of the overall Standings lately, there are guys who get most of their points from there - specifically Roman Reigns (who continues to get broader support during his Bray Wyatt program than he did previously). And there are definite patterns to when comment voters weigh in - Lucha Underground support comes later for instance, while online-only foreign and indy stuff collects the early points.

Last week was like watching a horse race. Nakamura's appearance on ROH TV helped him to an early lead, before the new LU #1 contender came charging in and made it close. All the while Rollins (for getting the band together to ground the Beast) and Owens (for spitting French at the U.S. champ) were steadily collecting points for their WWE work.

A rash of first place votes propelled The Architect to a sizeable lead, but KO continued to collect points from being 1 - 3 on most ballots. Suddenly, Seth dropped off a lot of late voters' lists entirely, while Owens kept up his steady pace. The NXT champ finally won by four points, or one first place vote.

All together, you Smarks voted for 50 different performers. The folks in slots 11 - 20, who receive no annual Standings points for that distinction, were within 10 points of ROH's #1 contender in tenth place.
