2-out-of-3 Falls Match match for the WWE Tag Team Championship
The New Day (c) vs. Cesaro & Tyson Kidd
The top two teams in WWE square off again for the company's prestigious tag team titles, this time in an old school best of three falls match. Can The Brass Ring Club avenge their Extreme Rules defeat and regain the belts, or will The New Day clap and cheat their way to victory again?
The Road to Payback
The New Day shocked the world at Extreme Rules by winning the WWE Tag Team Championship from The Brass Ring Club just a month after they started turning on the fans for thinking that their brand of happy-clappy preaching sucked. Cementing their move towards outright villainy, Kofi Kingston used a handful of tights to pin Cesaro and steal the belts from the increasingly popular Canadian-Swiss duo.
They scored another victory using foul means on Monday Night Raw one day later when Big E pinned Tyson Kidd in a singles match thanks to Xavier Woods holding onto Kidd's foot to prevent a kick-out after a clubbing lariat by E.
Nevertheless, The Brass Ring Club got a shot at the tag belts on the Apr. 30th Smackdown against The New Day's Big E and Kofi Kingston, which they won by disqualification when Xavier Woods broke up Kidd's pinfall attempt on E. Clearly, another championship rematch would be in order after The New Day retained their gold in such a cheap fashion.
The New Day's run of impressive results continued on the May 4th Raw when The New Day defeated Randy Orton and Roman Reigns in a 3-on-2 handicap match when Reigns accidentally speared his partner after Kofi Kingston dodged out of the way. However, Cesaro, Kidd and Natalya later rained on their parade by interrupting their backstage victory interview and leading the crowd into chanting "New Day Sucks!"
A great week for The New Day was capped off when they also defeated Cesaro, Tyson Kidd & Ryback on the May 7th Smackdown when a Bray Wyatt Titantron distraction allowed Kofi Kingston to roll-up a distracted Kidd from behind with a handful of tights for the three count.
However, the tide started turning against The New Day on this week's Raw, when Cesaro used a slick cradle to pin Big E in a singles match despite distraction from Xavier Woods on the outside. The Brass Ring Club's momentum going into Payback continued when Tyson Kidd submitted Kofi Kingston in another singles match on this week's Smackdown.
What's at Stake?
With rumors swirling about the first ever WWE Tag Team Championship Elimination Chamber match on the WWE Network EC special in two weeks time, whomever holds the belts after Payback may have grabbed a poisoned chalice. Having to defeat one team is bad enough, but as many as five in one night is a particularly tough order.
But you'd rather be in the driver's seat of controlling the titles than chasing after them, regardless of the stiff challenge upcoming. The New Day will hope to stay on top of the tag team mountain, while Cesaro & Tyson Kidd will want to reclaim that position tonight.
Find out whether The New Day's performance sucks or rocks at WWE Payback by watching the show live on the WWE Network tonight at 8pm EDT and following our live coverage at CagesideSeats.com!
