Although the direction was clear when they hinted at it on SmackDown last week, it didn't go official until tonight's episode of Monday Night Raw in Austin, Texas, when Randy Orton defeated Roman Reigns and Ryback in a triple threat match to become the true number one contender to Seth Rollins' WWE world heavyweight championship.
The two will have a match for said title in the main event of the Extreme Rules pay-per-view (PPV) on Sun., April 26, 2015, at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
The WWE Universe is still raving about Orton and Rollins' last encounter at WrestleMania, where The Viper ignited The Show of Shows by inconceivably countering Rollins' Curb Stomp into a high-elevation, highlight-reel-worthy RKO. Whereas Rollins and Orton's deeply personal and longstanding grudge was the foundation for that bout, their rematch at Extreme Rules will be not only emotionally charged, but also for the grandest prize in sports-entertainment.
It makes sense to give Rollins a relatively safe match to work in his first PPV title defense while we await the return of Brock Lesnar. Orton likely poses no real threat to take the strap away, but the match should be solid.
Here's the updated Extreme Rules line-up:
- Seth Rollins vs. Randy Orton (WWE world heavyweight title)
- John Cena vs. Rusev (US title)
