What Happened to SmackDown?

To be completely honest, SmackDown was my favorite of the Raw-SmackDown duo that WWE ran. It might be from the fact that its main color is blue. But in my opinion, it was because it could rival Raw better than TNA or some other wrestling promotion. I probably shouldn't go as far as to say that it was better than WCW or ECW because those were full-fledged, guns blazing promotions that were great in their own right.

WWE used to build up each promotion with its top superstars in which each had their own major storyline. There were hardly any superstars left over and there were certainly enough that you'd never get bored. Today, all we see is major story development on the Monday show while the low card has matches on Friday with little to no development.

Be it as it is, I can see NXT as a fledgling SmackDown in the sense that the internet is going crazy more over NXT than Raw which is supposed to be the #1 show on Cable 14-20 weeks in a row. Tell me I'm crazy, but if WWE is able to keep it up, they could totally replace SmackDown with NXT on TV in the next few years.

Kevin Owens just powerbombed Sami Zayn so many times if someone took a sound enhancing device to the mat, they would more than likely hear it scream for mercy. The same Zayn that everyone has been sold on for the past year or so. The same Zayn that we all believed would have a very long title run and take down anyone who opposed him in very tough, gritty matches that we'd all go crazy over and harp about for the next few months. Kevin Owens was the first and last blockade to the Zayn Dynasty.

Tell me NXT isn't doing something good with this?

Back to SmackDown. The likes of the Rey Mysterio, Chris Benoit, D-Von Dudley, Rikishi, and Edge were all apart of the initial split and they were some of the most interesting wrestlers in the past decade. Interesting in their own rights, they were very well main event status. Even Rikishi.

You know, that guy going into the Hall of Fame this year.

Why kill the buzz when they were equal or even better than the big brother show in Raw? Nowadays, people skip the show, whether it's on Fridays or Thursdays, and just read the spoilers. Because, why watch when you already know the top face will most of the time get over and when he doesn't, it isn't a big deal whatsoever. Although, Daniel Bryan, along with Bray Wyatt, is an interesting entity and I, myself would watch just for the two of them.

But why?

Because I'm so used to seeing low-cards be low-cards in unentertaining matches with some aspects of Tom and Jerry in the case that the face most of the time comes out on top. It's all I expect of SmackDown now.

Yeah, I understand that you want to protect your top superstars.

*cough* CM Punk *cough*

But what is the meaning behind saying there are no superstars other than John Cena who have grabbed the "brass ring" when you only allow your top superstars one 10-15 minute match per week and 5 minutes of promo time.

What's the use in putting the top superstars in an insurmountable match like Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns vs Kane, Big Show, Rollins, and J&J Security when it is painfully obvious they're going to win in order to put the faces over even stronger than they were the Monday before.

I mentioned NXT before, and I praised the audacity of Kevin Owens and the gritty stubbornness of Sami Zayn in their recent championship bout. In all truth, Triple H is the one who calls the shots down there in developmental while McMahon has a communism type government going on with creative for every other event besides maybe SmackDown.

Why do I bring this up?

Because Triple H has already stated that he would take back the third hour of Raw. So, why not let Aitch have creative control of SmackDown? There is a need for experienced, hands-on creative minds for SmackDown. Since he has no problem with NXT, he should have no problem handling Big Blue like the way it is now. I have complete faith that if Trips has the guts to do what he's doing in developmental, he would have no problem doing it to superstars who have already been called up and have been performing for years.

Let Triple H work his veteran magic on some of the other superstars while Big Vince works on the big picture, albeit he makes some very terribly nasty calls down the stretch.

Just because H couldn't kayfabe work on Raw as supreme overlord doesn't mean that he couldn't work SmackDown as one in reality.

Yes, it may be more work for Trips, but Vince Russo said it himself while talking about back in the day how they put their literal blood, sweat, and tears into making up the scripts and works for each night just to walk away happy with the product.

I certainly don't see any of that now.

Give Triple H some more creative freedom and allow him the chance to bring SmackDown back to the power struggle it belongs in against Raw.
