A full break down of the timing of the Royal Rumble match can be found by clicking here.

Royal Rumble PPVs always include more match time than typical WWE PPV events due to the Royal Rumble match taking up about an hour or so every year.  64.5% is the highest percentage of match time that I have ever calculated for a PPV going back to the beginning of 2013.

The overall match time of 1h 45m 09s falls just short of TLC 2014's score of 1h 46m 04s.  Royal Rumble 2015 was  a much shorter show, so that's why its percentage of 64.5% ended up higher than TLC 2014's percentage of 61.7%.

Royal Rumble 2015 went off the air at 43m 06s into its final hour.  This is the shortest final hour of any PPV that I have timed since the start of 2013.  Considering that the average 2014 PPV went off the air at 52m 15s, it looks like WWE was very conservative in timing out the lengthy Royal Rumble match.

The Royal Rumble 2014 PPV was also the shortest event of that year.

Michael Cole incorrectly stated that Seth Rollins was the iron man of the 2014 Royal Rumble match.  It's as if WWE wants you to forget that CM Punk ever existed.

The divas match time of 8m 04s ranks as the 6th longest PPV match featuring a diva out of 27 such matches since the start of 2013.

The first match of the show only lasted 5m 47s.  This is the shortest time for any PPV opener since the start of 2013.

In 2014, the only PPV opening match that fell under 10 minutes was Miz versus Ziggler (7m 51s) from SummerSlam 2014.

In 2013, only two PPV opening matches fell under 10 minutes:  Jericho vs Fandango (8m 36s) from Extreme Rules 2013 and Wyatt vs Kane (7m 49s) from SummerSlam 2013.

The last time the Intercontinental Championship received match time on a Royal Rumble PPV was in 2002, when Edge defeated William Regal.  That's an active streak that even Brock Lesnar wouldn't be able to conquer.

Pre-match Segments

The pre-match segments combined for a total time of 27m 30s, which is 16.9% of the show.

Here is the sorted list of pre-match segment time for all 5 matches:

  • 9m 00s: Lesnar vs Cena vs Rollins
  • 7m 48s: Royal Rumble match
  • 4m 15s: New Age Outlaws vs The Ascension
  • 3m 38s: The Usos vs Miz and Mizdow
  • 2m 49s: Bella Twins vs Natalya and Paige

Since the start of 2013, the three Royal Rumble events are the only PPVs with under 30 minutes of pre-match segment time.  Every other PPV included at least 33 minutes of pre-match segment time.

Royal Rumble 2015 included 11 separate pre-match superstar entrances.  These 11 entrances took up a total time of 13m 47s.  Here is the sorted list of these 11 entrance times:

  • 2m 09s: The Miz
  • 1m 58s: The Ascension
  • 1m 42s: The Usos
  • 1m 27s: Bella Twins
  • 1m 22s: John Cena
  • 1m 20s: Damien Mizdow
  • 1m 15s: Seth Rollins with Noble and Mercury
  • 1m 14s: Natalya and Paige
  • 1m 10s: Brock Lesnar with Paul Heyman
  • 1m 04s: R-Truth
  • 0m 26s: New Age Outlaws

The 28 entrances that all took place during the Royal Rumble match were not counted in this list.  Only the entrances for Miz and Truth were accounted for here, because those entrances took place before the match officially started.

The Miz tops the list because he had two pre-match entrances on this show.  His first entrance was with his tag team partner Mizdow, and that lasted 1m 20s.  His entrance before the Royal Rumble match then added on another 0m 49s to his ledger.

The Ascension's entrance lasted nearly two minutes because a lengthy 0m 52s Raw recap video was aired that summarized what happened to them during the NWO Reunion segment.  Their entrance also included the formal introduction of Michael Cole's announce team to the home viewers, which took up about 10 seconds.

The entrance time for the New Age Outlaws only reflects how long their music played when they walked out.  That's how I try to time every superstar entrance.  This method doesn't work well for the New Age Outlaws though, as their music was abruptly cut short so that Road Dogg could do his usual pre-match routine on the microphone.  Their pre-match mic time lasted about 1m 59s.

The entrance for the Bella Twins included a 0m 40s Raw recap of Paige sticking her nose in their business.

Natalya had a partial entrance before the music changed over to Paige's and then they walked to the ring together.  I counted this entire sequence as just one shared entrance for them.

Miz and Mizdow's team entrance included a 0m 16s plug for WWE Immortals and Hulu.

The entrance for The Usos included a 0m 31s Raw recap of their tag team championship victory over Miz and Mizdow.

Two matches received the special treatment of a dedicated video package right before superstar entrances.  The video hyping Lesnar's match lasted  2m 30s.  The video hyping the Royal Rumble match was the "By The Numbers" video, and it lasted 4m 28s.

When you add up all the time on the show that was spent on Raw recaps, Pre-show recaps, and dedicated video packages for the top matches, it adds up to a total time of 10m 43s.  Most of this time was squeezed into the pre-show segments, but some of it ended up in the Miscellaneous category.

Post-match Segments

The post-match segments combined for a total time of 9m 59s, which is 6.1% of the show.  These are the lowest marks that I have ever recorded for the post-match segment time of a PPV, going back to the start of 2013.

Here is the sorted list of the post-match segment time for all 5 matches:

  • 3m 35s: Royal Rumble match
  • 3m 24s: Lesnar vs Cena vs Rollins
  • 1m 06s: New Age Outlaws vs The Ascension
  • 1m 05s: Bella Twins vs Natalya and Paige
  • 0m 49s: The Usos vs Miz and Mizdow

There were no replays shown in the post-match segments for the tag team championship match as well as the Royal Rumble match.

This is one reason why the post-match segment for the tag team championship match will end up as one of the shortest of the year.  Only 2 PPV matches in 2014 had a shorter post-match segment time than 0m 49s.

Miscellaneous Segments

That leaves about 20m 28s (12.5%) of the show for everything else.

This includes commercials for WWE Immortals, WWE 24, WWE Total Control Double Attack Playset, Hulu, Fast Lane, and Austin's podcast with Triple H.  This also includes backstage segments featuring Heyman, The Authority, Rollins, Noble, and Mercury.  There was also an Expert Panel segment, as well as a video hyping WrestleMania 31.  The Raw recap of Sting's debut on Raw also fell into this category, as well as some filler commentary.  This also includes the video recap of the pre-show match, as well as the video where various superstars explain why they will win the Royal Rumble match.

Summary

Here is a listing of how much total show time was allocated for each match when you add up all 3 components: pre-match time, match time, and post-match time.

  • 70m 58s: Royal Rumble match (43.5% of total show time)
  • 35m 06s: Lesnar vs Cena vs Rollins (21.5%)
  • 13m 48s: The Usos vs Miz and Mizdow (8.5%)
  • 11m 58s: Bella Twins vs Natalya and Paige (7.3%)
  • 10m 48s: New Age Outlaws vs The Ascension (6.6%)

And here is a look at the "Match Time Percentage" for each match.  For any given match, this percentage shows how the match time compares to the combined pre-match and post-match segment time.

  • 84.0%: Royal Rumble match (59m 35s match, 11m 23s pre + post)
  • 67.8%: The Usos vs Miz and Mizdow (9m 21s match, 4m 27s pre + post)
  • 67.4%: Bella Twins vs Natalya and Paige (8m 04s match, 3m 54s pre + post)
  • 64.7%: Lesnar vs Cena vs Rollins (22m 42s match, 12m 24s pre + post)
  • 50.5%: New Age Outlaws vs The Ascension (5m 27s match, 5m 21s pre + post)
