Alberto Del Rio won't drop AAA Mega Championship

That "independent date" that the current WWE United States Champion will be working clearly won't be for AAA. Or at least, it won't be to lose the top belt in the company.

AAA's executive vice president, Dorian Roldan, was a guest on Monday's episode of Busted Open Radio on SiriusXM. During his interview, he confirmed that, although Alberto Del Rio would like to drop the AAA Mega Championship, which the newly-signed WWE Superstar has held since December of last year, WWE won't allow that to happen. As a result, AAA will be holding a tournament for the vacated championship next month.

It was recently reported that Del Rio would be allowed to work "an independent date" due to a prior commitment. Some assumed that date would be to relinquish the Mega Championship, but that's clearly not the case.

Roldan also stated that Del Rio's WWE contract, which has been the subject of much speculation over the past several weeks, is not what is being reported. It was initially reported by the Wrestling Observer that his contract was a $1.45 million downside guarantee per year, while WWE themselves stated it was worth less than $500,000 annually.
