Tonight's Royal Rumble pay-per-view at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was a top heavy card, with only two matches used to sell the show, those matches being the Royal Rumble itself and the Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena vs. Seth Rollins WWE world heavyweight championship match.
There was an undercard, however, and it played out like this:
- Tyson Kidd & Cesaro def. The New Day
Inexplicably, this was not a six-man tag as was advertised all the way up until the teams were in the ring. Instead, Woods and Adam Rose acted as cheerleaders. Kidd and Cesaro were over with the live crowd, Big E and Kofi Kingston were booed, and they engaged in a sloppy but fun match with a great finishing sequence that saw Kidd & Cesaro go over.
- The Ascension def. New Age Outlaws
It wasn't a squash match, as some (re: me) expected but the recent NXT call ups did win after hitting their finish, The Fall of Man. However, they sold for much of the bout and their offense wasn't altogether impressive along the way. Still, JBL attempted to put this over as a major win for the young, up-and-coming team.
- The Usos def. The Miz & Damien Mizdow
The story of this match was quite simply, really: Everything revolved around Mizdow and what he was able -- or not able -- to do. The crowd wanted Mizdow and they made that loud and clear throughout. For his part, Mizdow showed his appreciation a little more than usual. He also worked hard to score a win for his team but Miz failed to capitalize on his hard work. They did not tease a break up in a big way but the Royal Rumble was still to come.
- Bella Twins def. Paige & Natalya
They gave the ladies plenty of time to work with and the result was a damn good match, a simple tag team bout that saw the heels get the heat until Natalya was inching to a hot tag to a fresh Paige before Brie knocked her off the apron and Nikki capitalized with an elbow that got the pin on an already weakened Natalya.
