WWE Night of Champions 2014: Sheamus vs. Cesaro U.S. title match official

As announced during tonight's airing of Friday Night SmackDown on the SyFy channel, Sheamus will defend the United States championship against Cesaro at the upcoming Night of Champions pay-per-view (PPV) on Sun., Sept. 21, 2014, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

These two began a flirtation at SummerSlam weekend activities, notably on the 2K15 panel. has more:

Even before overcoming RVD on the Aug. 25 edition of Raw, The Swiss Superman, a former United States Champion in his own right, clearly had his sights set on WWE's stars-and-stripes title. A week prior to beating Van Dam, Cesaro sat in on commentary during Sheamus' match against Curtis Axel on WWE Main Event, and after the Celtic Warrior's win, Cesaro grabbed the title and inspected it before arrogantly tossing the prize to the champion. He continued his disrespectful antics after claiming the No. 1 Contender spot on Raw, too, throwing the U.S. Championship in the face of Sheamus.

Of note, this match was announced during SmackDown while Sheamus was working with The Miz, who is involved in a program with Dolph Ziggler over the Intercontinental championship, while Cesaro was nowhere to be found.

Here's the updated Night of Champions match card and line-up:

- Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena (WWE world heavyweight championship)
- Sheamus vs. Cesaro (U.S. championship)
