There's a lot of debate in sports about who is the greatest of a particular discipline or skill, but there's usually some consensus about who belongs in an elite group of the best of all time. Pro wrestling is no exception.
With that in mind, believe this: John Cena is one of the greatest wrestlers ever. I can't say where he ranks among the Ric Flair/Andre the Giant/Bret Hart/Steve Austin type of rarified air, but there's no question he's in that elite phylum.
But enough about legacies and history, Cena is the WWE World Heavyweight Champion right now!
Daniel Bryan and CM Punk are gone, probably forever. The Rock and Batista are movie stars. Roman Reigns and Cesaro aren't yet, and may never be, ready. Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins might end each others' careers before either can emerge as a star.
John Cena is the singular standard-bearer in WWE. Well... Cena and Brock Lesnar.
Make no mistake about it. Brock Lesnar is a special attraction. Every time he fights in front of a worldwide audience, whether it's in WWE, UFC, or out behind his local Jimmy Johns, it is a big deal. And we are all fortunate to bear witness to one of the great destroyers in the history of our sport.
As such, the main event at SummerSlam is an attraction.
But Brock isn't the only reason that this match has the attention of the world. John Cena is among of greats of all time, and he's on a roll that equals any that he's had before. Any match where he's involved, especially a world title defense, is a special attraction in it's own right.
Let's face it, it's very possible that Brock Lesnar defeats John Cena at SummerSlam. I know this is true because John Cena lost to that undersized-underdog Daniel Bryan last year, while I witnessed Brock Lesnar chop down the Undertaker's legendary WrestleMania undefeated streak just a few months ago at WrestleMania. If that happens, then Brock drags the WWE Championship with him to Minnesota and the landscape of WWE changes forever.
All the more reason to stop and enjoy all that John Cena has given to us and the sport of professional wrestling.
