Although it shouldn't have been, WWE surprised by booking Daniel Bryan's latest defense of the WWE world heavyweight title, a hardcore match against Kane, in the main event of tonight's (Sun., May 4, 2014) Extreme Rules event at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
This was a weird match.
The booking was quite simple: Kane was out to destroy Bryan and he did everything he could to accomplish just that. Bryan, pissed at Kane having attacked his wife, returned the favor.
They brawled all over the place, including in the parking garage where Bryan took a hard bump on a car, but not before beating on Kane with a shovel.
Take that, Triple H!
They took forever to set up a spot where Bryan drove Kane into the arena on a forklift, dumped him in the ring, and hit a flying headbutt off a pallet. It got a two count. Kane made a brief comeback with a choke slam but Bryan battled out and used a chair to destroy his former tag team partner.
Bryan went through a table on the outside. This led to Kane lighting a table on fire -- but not before multiple WWE employees got into position with fire extinguishers. Kane ended up going through the table himself -- with Michael Cole making the call that THE DEMON HAS BEEN SET ON FIRE -- before the extinguishers were quickly called on.
And by quickly I mean seconds.
Back in the ring, Bryan hit the knee to get the pin to retain his title.
Kane still stood and did his fire gimmick as the show went off the air to his music.
