It's been the clear direction for a couple weeks now but it didn't go official until just after last night's episode of Friday Night SmackDown: Sheamus will defend his United States championship against Cesaro at the upcoming Payback pay-per-view (PPV) scheduled for Sun., June 1, 2014, at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
From WWE.com, where the news was broken:
Cesaro will challenge United States Champions Sheamus for the title at WWE Payback on June 1, WWE.com has confirmed.
The championship contest caps off a recent series of hard-hitting, non-title matches between The Swiss Superman and The Celtic Warrior. The first meeting, on the May 13 edition of WWE Main Event, saw Cesaro and Sheamus brawl outside the ring and into the WWE Universe, resulting in a double count-out. Even after the bell rang, WWE officials struggled to separate the two bruisers; Cesaro attacked Sheamus with a steel chair, but The Dublin-born bruiser rebounded with a Brogue Kick.
These two have great chemistry and should have themselves a veritable hoss fight with the amount of time they'll be given to work at the PPV.
Here's the updated Payback match card and line-up:
- Evolution vs. The Shield (No Holds Barred Elimination)
- John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt (Last Man Standing)
- Bad News Barrett vs. Rob Van Dam (Intercontinental title)
- Sheamus vs. Cesaro (U.S. title)
