To determine the next number one contender to the Intercontinental championship, a "Beat the Clock" challenge was held on tonight's (May 19) episode of Monday Night Raw in London, England, featuring match-ups that included Big E vs. Ryback, Alberto Del Rio vs. Rob Van Dam, and Dolph Ziggler vs. Mark Henry.
In the end, RVD won his match the fastest, meaning he'll be the man to challenge Bad News Barrett for the title on Sun., June 1, 2014, at the Payback pay-per-view (PPV) at the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois, on the WWE Network.
Because of Van Dam's status with the company and the unique contract he signed that dictates he works in short bursts of roughly three months per clip, it's not a stretch to think this is simply a fairly high profile program for Barrett designed solely to put him over using a star of higher stature and standing within the industry.
Everyone okay with that?
Here's the updated Payback match card and line-up:
- Evolution vs. The Shield (No Holds Barred Elimination)
- John Cena vs. Bray Wyatt (Last Man Standing)
- Bad News Barrett vs. Rob Van Dam (Intercontinental title)
