With WrestleMania 30 all set to invade the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this coming Sun., April 6, 2014, live on pay-per-view (PPV) and the WWE Network, it's time to go about making predictions for the biggest show of the year. The match card is filled out and the cSs staff of learned blowhards will give their best guess on who is going to emerge victorious this weekend.
But instead of doing this all in one post and giving you a wall of text and 3,000 words to read through, we'll give the top five matches their own post then cover the undercard.
Got it? Good. Last but not least, the undercard:
The Usos vs. Rybaxel vs. Real Americans vs. Los Matadores
The General: I actually like that this match was put on the pre-show because I like to imagine the participants are hyping themselves up for it by thinking they can steal the show with a long match that isn't in danger of being cut short due to time constraints. We got a bit of a preview of this on Raw this past Monday night, though that was an eight-man tag instead of a fatal four-way. That means we have a lot more chaos to look forward to in this match. There isn't much story for this match, though it's possible Cesaro and Jack Swagger could split up here, especially if the decision is made to keep The Shield together. I'll go with that as the big angle with the titles staying on the two Samoans they came in with.
Pick: The Usos
Sean Rueter: The only thing making me second guess the champs retaining here is the decision to hold off on the break-up of The Real Americans. The face reactions for Cesaro and the catch phrase make a win for Zeb's boys a possibility, but I imagine they'll count on a spot-filled match to get the crowd going with the likeable twins retaining after one of the pins Curtis Axel.
Pick: The Usos
Keith Harris: This should be a pleasant crowd warmer and should tease dissension between Jack Swagger and Antonio Cesaro before their imminent breakup, but less is more here. A title change would be forgotten about long before the end of the night and The Usos really deserve a long run with the belts, after being underrated workhorses for so long and gradually building momentum over the last year with one sterling performance after another.
Pick: The Usos
Cain A. Knight: This should be a fun match because of Cesaro, the Usos, El Torito, and Curtis Axel's nipples. And maybe Ryback will live tweet (and delete) as Cesaro is swinging him around the squared circle. Ultimately it will come down to either the Usos or the Real Americans walking out as tag team champions. It seems to me that the Real Americans are probably headed for a split shortly after WrestleMania 30, so it wouldn't make much sense to put the tag titles on them right now.
Pick: The Usos
Vickie Guerrero's Divas Championship Invitational
The General:This match is going to be amazing, not because it will be a technical masterpiece on par with the Shawn Michaels vs. Bret Hart Iron Man match from WrestleMania 12 but because it will be a modified clusterfuck of epic proportions. Consider this: how many good Divas matches have you seen in the past three years? I can only think of AJ Lee vs. Natalya from Main Event a couple weeks ago, and that's it. Natalya has been awful since then and AJ hasn't been given much time to do her thing, with the focus instead on her pending break up with Tamina Snuka. All that to say this: The Divas division can barely put together a good match with only two women in the ring at one time. Here, they're going to have to do it with 14 women in there at one time. The best part? This isn't a battle royal, it's one fall to a finish. Anyone can pin anyone else and whoever does so wins the Divas title. This is going to be awesome. I'll go with Daniel Bryan's better half.
Pick: Brie Bella
Sean Rueter: She's survived everything they've thrown at her, and countless predictions of a Total Divas-driven title change. This match was booked by a heel authority figure just to stack the deck against her. Almost everything about her booking leading into WrestleMania says babyface. Nobody is built up enough to make sense as champ other than her, as I think they have wisely decided that the target audience for the E! reality show (and its taping schedule) make having the belt appear their unnecessary and unwieldy. No, I don't think they have any clue what they're doing with the division, and given that they won't mess with what has largely been a successful formula: AJ as champ, Total Divas as Total Divas.
Pick: AJ Lee
Keith Harris: I'm not buying the CM Punk will shock the world by returning at WrestleMania stories and expect WWE will give his new fiancee an early wedding present by having her immediately drop her beloved Divas strap. Given who they're dating, one of The Bellas would be the favourites to get the nod. Nikki's lover has the most clout, but Brie would be the more sentimental choice, potentially winning the gold on the same night as her soon to be hubby does, being perfectly sappy reality TV fodder. So I have to go with the latter option, as Total Divas seems much more important than anything else the women do on WWE television nowadays.
Pick: Brie Bella
Cain A. Knight: This match is going to be a train wreck, but it could still be extremely fascinating to see how WWE puts together a one-fall match involving 14 divas. It is tempting to predict that AJ will finally lose the championship here because there are several divas (Emma, Brie, Nikki, Summer, Natalya, Naomi) who could be in line for a push. However I think that WWE is going to go the other way here. AJ has beaten every opponent who has challenged for her championship on PPV. I think this match will be AJ's capstone to that dominant run, and she will simultaneously conquer them all to finally prove that none of the current divas are in her league.
Pick: AJ Lee
The Shield vs. Kane & New Age Outlaws
The General: I wish I could care about this match as far as the story line goes, but I really don't. The New Age Outlaws have never been presented as legitimate threats while Kane only represents that because of his position of power. The thing about that is his position of power has only given him two frogs over 40 who aren't feeling jumpy. I expect a decent match because it's The Shield and that's what they do, but there's nothing here to be excited about, especially because it no longer feels like there are plans to break the trio apart.
Pick: The Shield
Sean Rueter: This pick is probably coming from my heart more than my head, but I want a few more months of The Hounds as good guys. The only way it would make any kind of sense for The Authority team to win would be if Ambrose and/or Rollins turned on Reigns - the only time the veterans have made any kind of a dent in The Shield's armor they needed to hire three other teams to soften them up first. I just hope it can live up to the suddenly high standards we have for WWE trios matches.
Pick: The Shield
Keith Harris: A month ago, I'd have been predicting the disintegration of The Shield here, but the superb quality of their bouts against The Wyatt Family and the crowd warming to them to a surprising degree in their confrontations with Kane, should cause them to put the brakes on that idea. Which is a good thing in my book. Roman Reigns definitely has headliner potential, but the current fate of Big E shows the risks of breaking up a good act too soon, especially when it hides the inexperience and weaknesses of their most junior member. This also should be the time for youth to shine, as it's unlikely their middle aged opposition will see many more WrestleMania moments other than their inevitable WWE Hall Of Fame inductions.
Pick: The Shield
Cain A. Knight: The Shield never have a bad match so this one should at least be ok. However, there isn't much potential for a show-stealing performance from the popular trio on the biggest stage of them all. This match seems like a wasted opportunity considering that Harper and Rowan do not have a match on the card. The main issue is that Kane and the Outlaws have a combined work rate that is worse than almost any other trio that The Shield has faced off against since their debut. And even in the case that Kane and the Outlaws exceed my expectations in that regard, this match will still face a typical undercard time constraint that will prevent it from standing out. As for the booking of this match, if I didn't read all the rumors indicating a potential Shield break up at this event, I would not expect it to go down this soon considering how hot they are right now. So in this case I will ignore the rumors and stick with basic logic. And the basic logic says that The Shield should pulverize these dinosaurs from the past and save the break up for when the stakes are higher.
Pick: The Shield
