Alberto Del Rio put his world heavyweight championship on the line tonight (Sun., Sept. 15, 2013) at the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Michigan, at the Night of Champions pay-per-view (PPV) in a singles bout against Rob Van Dam.
And he's still holding the Big Gold Belt.
The good news is Van Dam continued his streak of having good-to-great matches since his WWE return back on July 14 at Money in the Bank. He's been good enough to get here as the number one contender to the secondary world title, but not good enough to actually win the strap.
In a not so surprising twist, although ultimately terribly unsatisfying, RVD got to keep some heat by winning via disqualification when Del Rio locked in the Cross Armbreaker and simply wouldn't let go at the count of five when Van Dam got to the rope.
To keep the crowd happy, Van Dam went old school and hit the Van Terminator before posing with the belt he failed to win.
