The WWE Night of Champions pay-per-view (PPV) didn't kick off with a match but instead a 15-minute long segment featuring Triple H making promises that the main event of the evening, Daniel Bryan vs. Randy Orton, would be contested without outside interference.
Then, Paul Heyman and Curtis Axel interrupted to make a final plea for the former to avoid a match with CM Punk. It only resulted in "The King of Kings" booking Axel to defend his Intercontinental championship against the first wrestler Triple H ran into when he got behind the curtain.
Naturally, that wrestler ended up being Kofi Kingston.
The two had a surprisingly entertaining match with Kingston coming oh so close to walking away with the beautiful white leather strap, but Axel ultimately overcame and retained his title.
