AJ Styles "Pipebomb" and other TNA thoughts from this week

Hey, all. Since there was no TNA recap this week, I've decided to go ahead and do a quick one of my own. I'm not trying to step on any toes here at CSS by doing this -- there was just some TNA stuff I wanted to discuss. Mainly negative because it's TNA.

  • I'll start with the headliner and that's Style's attempt at a Pipebomb. Two AJs dropped promos this week. Only one was truly good. Listen, I really like Styles. His in ring work is a treat every time. But his mic work has always been par at best. The things he got to say were Pipebombish because they were true. The fact that Dixie comes up with the worst ideas and then has to fall back on AJ Styles to save her. (Such as when she banked on Nash and Booker to rejoin the Main Event Mafia but they went to WWE instead.) The Claire Lynch BS. What he had to say was true. But the way he said it didn't sell it well. It's easier to buy something shitty sold by a good salesman than something good sold by a poor one.

  • It was ballsy as has to allude to the "Best in the World" at the beginning of the promo. What was he trying to accomplish by that? To tell us he was going to try a Pipe Bomb? Unless he's out the door and already has a WWE storyline feuding with Punk, it was stupid. Just made us remember what great promos sound like and this just wasn't one of them.

  • The fact he can't deliver a stellar promo when he has 4th wall material to work with is the reason he'd never make it in the WWE. Good in ring work only gets you so far. You need to have that fire too (or be Curtis Axel.)

  • Last thought about the promo: The crowd straight up sucked for it. If they bought into it just a little, it would have looked better. But they didn't know what to do. I am always curious these TNA fans who go to these shows. The fact they mark out like hell for Hogan has me stunned.

  • Since we're there, onto Hogan. God I can't stand him now. The main event of the show was him on the mic telling us stuff that Tenay could have relayed over headset during the show. I would have preferred the 10 to 15 minutes given to Hogan divided in half and given to the Styles/Roode match and Daniels/Aries match. But the crowds do eat it up so what I do know?

  • And to the part that actually made me say "Fuck you TNA" outloud, Sting getting a title match? God I'm sick and tired of TNA just ignoring their own stories. Like the story about Sting never getting a title match again because he lost to Bully when he main evented a PPV that he had no business main eventing in the first place. Now I avoid spoilers so I don't know how it plays out, but just outwardly ignoring a stip makes me wonder "Why bother?" As a fan, I always feel a bit insulted with wrestling companies blatantly ignore their past stories.

  • As for the good of the show, the 2 out of 3 falls between ODB and Gail was strong. I wouldn't expect less with those two. Roode/AJ and Daniels/Aries delivered too, but again, they should. I think if they had a little more time, they could have been great match ups. Hardy/Kaz didn't resonate for me, but Hardy matches haven't resonated with me in a long time. Much like RVD in TNA, they feel mailed in.

OK, that's enough ranting about TNA. It's come to the point that I watch this show as a wrestling historian who is curious to watch the death of a company over watching for entertainment. What do you all think? Feel free to sound off at me.
