The Money in the Bank pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sun., July 14, 2013) at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, didn't close with the John Cena vs. Mark Henry WWE championship match. Instead, the promotion chose to end the evening with the WWE championship Money in the Bank ladder match that featured Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, Rob Van Dam, Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Christian.
That's a solid group of "All Stars" but they had plenty to live up to considering the quality of the other ladder match earlier in the evening.
They did what they could but it seemed clear there was more reliance on sheer star power than big spots. That's not to say there weren't any, as Sheamus nearly broke his back falling off the ladder, took a huge bump onto a suspended ladder from the ring to the announce desk, all six went flying collectively at another point, and RVD pleased the bloodthirsty audience with a frog splash from the top of a ladder.
Still, the pacing was slower and there was far more alternating between working talent in the ring.
The finish saw Bryan take absolutely everyone out before Curtis Axel, of all people, hit the ring to take him out. This led to Axel eating a GTS from a recovering Punk. Paul Heyman ran down and loudly shouted at Axel that he took matters into his own hands and that wasn't right for him to do.
Then, Heyman repeatedly encouraged Punk to go up the ladder and get the briefcase before turning on him and knocking him off, taking him out before stomping away.
RVD had his chance then to win the match but he ended up taking an RKO off the ladder. Orton proceeded to slowly climb the ladder, survey the destruction before him, and grab the briefcase to win the match.
Wow.
