It's great to track the Wrestler Wrankings on a weekly basis. There's no better way to compare the greatest athletes in the world to their peers over a given time period.
But there's more that we can do with our treasure trove of data. Chief among them is comparing entire wrestling seasons to one another. And while don't know what the rest of this season will bring we can certainly stack what's happened so far up to last year to see what we can learn.
What better way to begin than at the top? Sheamus currently leads the Wrankings with 28 points. The first 14 weeks of last season also saw Sheamus out in front with a total of 49.5 points. Absolutely incredible.
Rounding out the current top 3 is a tie between Curtis Axel and Alberto Del Rio, both with 27.5 points. Last year at this time, second place CM Punk and and third place Ryback had 36.5 and 36 points respectively.
Taken together, the top three through week 14 this season have a total of 83 points compared to last season's 122.
Important to note is the the overall points scored to date of the two seasons in question are nearly identical with 424.5 in 12-13 and 435.5 this season. That means that through 14 weeks, the top three scored 28% of all points last year compared to 19.5% this year. That's a huge difference in an otherwise similar scoring climate.
So what does all this mean?
I think that when we look back on the 2012-13 season many years from now, we will see it as something of an aberration. Sheamus, Punk, and Ryback all enjoyed phenomenal, likely career-best seasons, that simply overshadowed everybody else.
If only I would ever get back to my 1998 WCW Historical Wrankings series, we could compare all this to Goldberg's epic run at the top of the sports world...
