On this date in WWE history: CM Punk announces he's leaving the company on Raw

The so called "Summer of Punk" didn't officially begin, not really, until his now infamous worked shoot promo on Monday Night Raw on June 27, 2011. But it was one week before then that he dropped a bombshell that kickstarted the hottest angle World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) has seen in years.

On this date in WWE history (June 20, 2011), CM Punk announced on that his contract would be expiring on July 17, the same night as the Money in the Bank pay-per-view (PPV) event where he would challenge John Cena for the WWE championship.

Here's his promo:

"July 17, 2011, will be the most historic day not only in the career of CM Punk, it's going to be a historic day for the WWE as a whole. Not only is July 17 the second annual Money in the Bank ladder match PPV, it's the night I defeat John Cena for the WWE championship. Now here's that honesty I was talking about, that honesty that's probably gotten me in trouble more times than I'd like to admit, the brutal honesty I'm know for; July 17 is the day my contract with World Wrestling Entertainment comes to an end. That means when the clock strikes midnight, 17 becomes 18, Sunday bleeds into Monday -- I'm leaving. And trust me when I tell you, I am leaving with the WWE championship."

This was just a taste of what was to come, as the very next week he would unleash his first pipe bomb on the pro wrestling world and captivate the masses with his message. It led to increased exposure in the mainstream media and Punk becoming one of the few wrestlers to break through the WWE glass ceiling to become a major star while Cena has hogged the spotlight on top.

It started here but it would only get better.
