Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.
Important reminder: Rumors are just that -- rumors. None of this has been confirmed as legitimate news or fact; so remember to take it all with a grain of salt.
Rumors for the Day:
- As you've likely heard by now, Rob Van Dam is returning to the WWE at July's Money in the Bank pay per view from the old ECW heartland of Philadelphia, PA. The deal with RVD is believed to be a short term one, similar to the part time deals enjoyed by other stars like Chris Jericho and Brock Lesnar. Rumor has it that part of the motivation in bringing back RVD is actually to replace Jericho during the month of August, when he is scheduled to return to touring with his band, Fozzy. As of right now, it seems that RVD will return at Money in the Bank, then work a near-full time schedule through August until SummerSlam, an event that Jericho will miss. Jericho has been touring with the Smackdown branded house shows, and WWE wanted to have a popular replacement for him on that circuit rather than further deplete it of talent. If all goes well, the deal with RVD could be extended beyond.
- The Ryback/John Cena feud is officially over by all accounts, with Cena now moving on to a Money in the Bank match with Mark Henry for the WWE title. But what of Ryback? There doesn't appear to be room for him in any of the singles title scenes at the moment and most believe he'll tumble back down the card. Despite this, WWE brass still sees him as a future headliner and wants to build him back up as a legitimate monster. Ryback hasn't won a match on a pay per view in nearly a year, so look him to be placed into some non-title feuds where he can score victories to rebuild his stock.
- Those who watched Main Event last night (June 19) saw the Usos, with Justin Gabriel, taking on the Shield in six man tag team action. Over the past several weeks, the Usos have been built up as challengers to Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, and there were even plans to have a match between the teams at Payback which was nixed. Now, it appears that the two teams may be headed towards a match at Money in the Bank. Rumors also suggest that the Brothers of Desctruction (Kane and the Undertaker) may reunite at SummerSlam to battle the Shield, and that the Shield may cross paths with the Wyatt family down the line as well. US Champion Dean Ambrose, meanwhile, appears to headed for a (slight spoiler) feud with the returning Christian.
- Since the aforementioned Christian finally returned to WWE TV, fellow perennially superstar Rey Mysterio will have to carry the "injury report" segment. Mysterio will need yet another surgery with Dr. James Andrews before he will be able to return to action, possibly putting his planned August return in jeopardy.
