Even if the feud wasn't connecting with the audience, WWE decided it wanted to put its company flag-bearer, John Cena, in a 3 Stages of Hell match with its biggest monster, Ryback, at tonight's (Sun., June 16, 2013) Payback pay-per-view (PPV) from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, Illinois.
The first fall, contested as a lumberjack match, went to Ryback, who pinned Cena following a Shell Shock. There was nothing special about the first stage other than Cena hitting a splash from the top rope onto each and every lumberjack while they were attacking Ryback.
It was actually one hell of a spot.
The second fall, contested as a tables match, saw Cena overcome the adversity he faced in the initial fall to reverse the Shell Shock into an Attitude Adjustment through a table set up in the middle of the ring. But not before plenty of near misses, and teases, and close calls and all that.
The third and final fall, contested as an ambulance match, featured the two of them using the ambulance as a weapon in every way imaginable. That included Cena Irish whipping Ryback into a door that went flying off, Ryback ripping off a fender and hitting Cena with it, Cena smashing Ryback with the lights attached to the roof, and Cena hitting an AA on the roof of the ambulance.
It was a gimmicked roof and Ryback went through it into the cargo area, leading to Cena winning the fall and retaining his title.
