The unfortunate concussion suffered by Dolph Ziggler at the foot of the cowardly Jack Swagger on SmackDown two weeks ago led to the latter getting booked in a number one contender match with Alberto Del Rio at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view (PPV) tonight (Sun., May 19, 2013) at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri.
And, because WWE knew it needed to try something fresh to make it interesting, it was an "I Quit" match.
That meant brutality, and they brought plenty of that, but it also meant the most annoying gimmick in history: the referee absurdly interrupting the match every few seconds or after every moderately big spot just to ask if one of the two wanted to quit. And this started within the first two minutes of the bout.
Way too early.
The finish was also ... odd. Yeah, we'll use that word for it because it saw the referee call for the bell and award the win to Swagger after Zeb Colter threw the towel in. Yes, that's Colter but he did so from the position Ricardo Rodriguez was standing, so there was confusion.
Then they consulted instant replay. I shit you not, that's what happened.
Naturally, the match restarted and Del Rio used the Cross Armbreaker to force Swagger to utter the words "I Quit."
