Like many of you, I'm really excited for WrestleMania 29.
I love professional wrestling and WrestleMania is like Christmas and the Super Bowl mixed together for the true fans around the world. It's also the one show of the year where the (unfair) stigma of professional wrestling is seemingly lifted and mainstream media and those who are ashamed to say they secretly love wrestling can join in with the loyal, vocal minority of fans. It's a beautiful thing!
Also like many of you, I wish the announced match card was more relevant to the overall landscape of WWE. Jack Swagger and Alberto Del Rio will likely kick off the show to little fanfare, and neither of the secondary titles will be featured on the pay-per-view telecast. At least the WWE championship will be at stake in the main event, though it will be defended by a champion, The Rock, who only got his shot at the belt due to a legacy that's a decade old.
And, really, that's the compromise of WrestleMania. The world loves to see the big stars like Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, and The Rock get it on. Unfortunately, the attention becomes focused so tightly on these legends of the sport, that the rank and file of the roster must toil in relative obscurity.
Let's face it, in addition to being the purest form of sport ever conceived by man, professional wrestling is also a business. And business dictates that WrestleMania is when the biggest stars come out to shine. But it's also the night where history is written and legends are made. The onus is on the rest of the WWE roster to seize the opportunity, when the spotlight is at it's brightest, to create their own legends.
Enjoy WrestleMania 29 everybody. It's sure to be a night we won't ever forget.
And be sure to check this space next week for a season wrap up. Has it been a year already?!!
