AJ Styles' journey started last year when he was defeated in a triple threat match that dictated he wouldn't be able to challenge for the TNA heavyweight championship again until at least Bound for Glory 2013. Well, it's now Sun., Oct. 20, 2013, and Bound for Glory is invading the Viejas Arena in San Diego, California.
Styles is headlining against Bully Ray for the heavyweight title.
He got here by winning the Bound for Glory Series, but his story has become a retread of so many pro wrestling angles. Essentially, he's battling not just Ray for the belt, but company President Dixie Carter for fair respect and compensation. She's the heel authority figure and he's the anti hero babyface come to save us all from the corrupted leaders.
Except this promotion is floundering and it's hard to care about a second rate storyline from a second rate organization with second rate talent, especially when the first rate folks, WWE, are smack dab in the middle of telling the same story.
So Styles may win tonight but he probably won't do it in front of many paying customers and the ship might sink on him anyway. At least he battled until the very end, right?
