I think that's where I'm at with The Rock. I’m not fond of the WWE mega-[dick]face character, but I’d rather see it done with intensity & bravado than smirking phony self-deprecation. It blends well with the direction Punk took last night, in part because it validates some aspects of Punk’s stance. People talk down “cheap” heat and heel tactics, and while Punk had a little of that flavor, he attacked some very core aspects of what the WWE is about with cutting honesty. To have Rock play right into it doesn’t take away from their confrontation in my eyes, it adds to it and enhances Punk’s work. by King Oskar on Jan 8, 2013 10:03 AM EST 4 recs

Hi. It’s pretty easy to look superior when you “break character” or go “off script”. I liked punk better when he was whiny, bringing fake doctors and acting all surprised when the fake doctor tells him he’s not allowed to wrestle. All part of the pro wrestling that we love. Rock is playing his WWE character in his promo, Punk took 15 minutes to cut a promo (which I enjoyed) in which he played a character who broke character and pointed out “real issues” behind the scenes. That’s not genius, it’s easy. If Heath Slater came out and did the same we would all be praising the little feisty redhead on how great a promo he cut. Punks first promo over a year ago was perfect and made him a star. But when you rely on breaking character to be effective then maybe your not so talented after all. Ask yourselves, when Austin and Rock had those amazing feuds, how many times did they break character to have an epic feud. How bout Shawn Michaels? Taker? Tatanka?? Sorry, got a little carried away there. Wrestlings scripted, we get it, but when watching 3 hours of it, I don’t need a wrestler coming out and telling me everything I seen was fake but this is real. Just like I don’t need Superman at the end of the upcoming Man Zof Steel movie right before he fights Zod to stop and say “Michael Shannon it’s bull that Kevin Costner, who plays my Earth Dad in this movie, isn’t getting a proper push in my opinion.” That would blow. Punks good, very good, but until he holds his own against The Rock without breaking character, then he is nowhere near the Rock’s league. Ok thanks, bye ! by Peetvek on Jan 8, 2013 9:51 AM EST 6 recs

He always has said controversial things, that’s the whole gimmick, yea he didn’t shoot for the last year but then last night wasn’t really a shoot either it was him using some backstage stuff to spice up what was a pretty typical heel promo where he blamed everything on the fans, heck that’s heel 101. It was pretty typical for Punk last night he just cut a really good promo, him mentioning some backstage stuff doesn’t mean that it was any more of a shoot than Cena getting on the Rock for the via satellite appearances last year. Just because he mentioned Daniel Bryan doing catchphrases doesn’t make it a shoot or that he was doing anything different in character than he has been doing. Shit it’s all still the “no respect” gimmick from Punk. The Rock vs Hogan was 10 years ago, the wrestling world has changed in the last decade. I mean I loved Rick Flair’s work in the 80’s but that doesn’t mean that if you aren’t doing that now you are doing something wrong. by who me on Jan 8, 2013 1:06 PM EST 4 recs
and...
last night was NOT a shoot and he did NOT break character. He didn’t talk about non-kayfabe aspects of anything; he merely mentioned the way people change in order to appease the audience and how he (Punk) refused to do the same. He’s been talking for months about how “no one ever believed in him” and “only two men thought I could do it, and they’re both in this ring”, etc. His character has been a “me against the world” gimmick ever since he turned heel. He’s been a coward in matches and found cheap ways to win, but on the microphone he has talked TONS of shit and acted like he was the best and was the only one who could do what he’s done. That’s exactly what he did last night. Talked tons of shit, acted like he was the best, told everyone he’s the only one who doesn’t pander to the audience, said he does things on his own terms and his own terms only (which has been his gimmick for a LONG time), etc. The entire promo was IN character, in my opinion; and that’s why it was so awesome and at the same time all made perfect sense. by liberty_JAC on Jan 8, 2013 4:44 PM EST 7 recs

Round 1 goes to the Rock. It wasn’t a 10-8 or anything, but Rock did everything he had to here. Pandered to all of America. Told Punk he hasn’t really delivered on anything from his first pipebomb. But here’s where I give the Rock the most credit, old school fight promoting. He hyped up all of Punks accomplishments, 414, beat everyone, knocked me out cold with the GTS. The Rock is making it believable that CM Punk can beat him at the Rumble. That’s a big thing. The Rock wasn’t in the ring with Cena, or HHH, or hell even Orton. He was in there with Indy star CM Punk, the guy who even as champion for an entire year played second fiddle to the John Cena championship, and The Rock was making you believe that this guy who is just above The Miz in Twitter followers has a chance to beat the Rock. I ate that shit up. I really did. by silverandblack88 on Jan 8, 2013 2:16 PM EST 4 recs

Dear Mr. Superstar Graham
had Punk putting over his 314 straight days as world champ and then
Its 414. Any chump can go 314. Only a real man goes 414.
" you had people like Burno Sammartino , only wrestled in Madison Square Garden only wrestled one a month."
This was by far the biggest put down of Bruno ever.
Its also absolutely true.
When that teenager looking CM Punk
CM Punk looks like he’s pushing 40 out there.
he was also talking about me, Ivan Koloff , Stan Hanson etc. Find the re run and listen closely and answer me this my Facebook friends – How can they justify putting down a real icon like this, and not get called out on it?
And what he said was as true about you guys as it was about Bruno
You talk about one of the greatest icons ever in pro wrestling like he was a JOBBER
If you’re not wrestling TLC or Hell In A Cell matches against THE Ryback, you’re pretty much a jobber.
You should be ashamed of yourself for not having the self-dignity to say NO to the writers on that line
It was probably CM Punk’s idea
That line you delivered indicates that I am a big loser like Bruno as well and insults me as I wrestled in the same era as Bruno
You held the WWE title for 296 days. That’s like 2 weeks in CM Punk years.
This only confirms more that I want my name out of the WWE Hall of Fame.
Still going on about that?
Quit talking trash about Bruno. It’s an insult to him and all the wrestlers of his era including myself!
Also, please stop making fun of the fans, It really hurts their feelings.

I've tried really hard, but I just can't give a shit about wrestling prior to the mid 70s. I can watch an old Superbowl film no problem, and enjoy lots of black and white TV and Movies, but the product is simply 1000 times more entertaining starting in the late 70s with guys like Flair, Steamboat, Rhodes, etc. I really don’t care if Lou Thesz is a better amateur wrestler, or if Bruno Sammartino was a legit badass of a man; they had little personality or charisma, and their style of wrasslin’ literally puts me to sleep. I agree with many of Sammartino’s comments about Vince McMahon and how he will do just about anything to make a buck and gain power, but that doesn’t mean that the product that McMahon produces isn’t infinitely more entertaining than anything that came before it. You’re bitter because nobody cares anymore, but the reality is that the biggest reason you were a star was antiquated ethnic identification from east-coast Italians, not because you were particularly good at what you did. by Gophermike on Jan 9, 2013 5:27 PM EST 5 recs

Punk should come out next week with a bald cap and a big fake looking handlebar mustache. Then you have all the wrestlers come up to him and say “Hey, Hogan! Alright!” Punk can go “No no. It’s Billy Graham.”
“The preacher?”
“No the superstar!”
“He preached AND Wrestled!?”
“NO. Superstar Billy Graham was a wrestler back in the day. This is what he looked like.”
“They let him get away with ripping of Hogan?”
“……..yes.”

That post makes me misty! My nephew was 7 yrs old during DDP reign at WCW as heavyweight champ. He was born with a defect that fused the bones in his right ankle together and he had to have his leg amputated. After taking him to the Shriner’s hospital in Atlanta, one of the men there gave us tickets to a TV taping, and my nephew got to meet DDP. Its one thing to hear from others about what a great guy he was with the fans and the like, quite another thing to se hi do what he did best- care. About the fans, his co-workers, , his karma was infectious. He was walking towards the dressing trailers and stopped to talk to all the kids and family memers there. Full of encouragement, wit, and genuine concern for all of them, he told my nephew to never give up on his dreams to be like everyone else. “Young man, the only thing holding you back is listening to the people who tell you you can’t.” He has two kids and rides dirt and street bikes, and never forgot what DDP said to him. It is always fun to bitch about stuff in the liveblog, even when the content is enjoyable. Snarky commenting is usually more entertaining than straight-up praise and compliments. That being said, the next 3 months are going to be the best three months of the year for many pro-wrestling fans, so if anybody watching the Rock’s segments truly find themselves bored and not entertained, it is going to be rough going. I am always happy when Dwayne is around. I’m a little bit happier when he isn’t force-feeding fans lines to chant and isn’t telling us what is trending worldwide on twitter. Maybe this means a gimmick change for Zack, even though I heard he was teaming with Clay and actually they were getting over with the higher ups.
I never understood the negativity towards Ryder. Is he the best wrestler? No, but he has been getting better when given the shot. And when he had control over his show, it was great until the WWE stepped in and killed it. The guy built himself up and worked his ass off, and actually made the United States Title feel important.
I do hope Ryder gets a chance to work things out and improve upon his gimmick and keep improving in the ring. by BFisch28 on Jan 11, 2013 5:20 PM EST 3 recs

Del Rio: “That wound healed months ago, Saymus. There is no reason we can’t unite together tonight, to defeat The Beeg Show.”
I think it would go like that. And I would probably mark. by liberty_JAC on Jan 11, 2013 9:21 PM EST 3 recs
