On this date in NWA history: Ricky Steamboat wins the title from Ric Flair at the Chi-Town Rumble

On February 20, 1989, the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) held the Chi-Town Rumble pay-per-view (PPV) event at the UIC Pavilion in Chicago, Illinois.

The big story heading into the "Windy City" extravaganza was, of course, the return of Ricky Steamboat, who appeared in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) the month before and was immediately booked to work a program against perennial headliner Ric Flair.

"The Dragon" was a big deal at the time, having just finished his run as Intercontinental Champion for the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), including his classic bout with Randy "Macho Man" Savage at WrestleMania III. Steamboat took a sabbatical from wrestling following the birth of his son in 1988.

But not for long.

His comeback and ensuing rivalry with "The Nature Boy" helped carve out another chapter in his pro wrestling career, starting with his first-ever NWA World Heavyweight Championship at the Chi-Town Rumble, which you can watch in its entirety, after the jump.
