On this date in NWA history: Rest in peace, Kerry Von Erich

On February 18, 1993, Kerry Gene Adkisson, known by his professional wrestling moniker of Kerry Von Erich, committed suicide at the age of 33.

Unfortunately, Von Erich's final days were, to be quite frank, a mess. He was in and out of trouble with the law and couldn't break free from the chains of drug addiction, the same addiction that led to his release from the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in early 1992.

In reality, no one could blame him for taking painkillers. In addition to losing his foot in a motorcycle accident in 1986, his brother David died on tour in Japan in 1984 and Mike committed suicide in 1987.

That's about as rough a three year span as you can get.

While mainstream WWF fans knew him as "The Texas Tornado," Von Erich was a World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) sensation in the 80's, racking up NWA titles left and right and had some very memorable feuds against the Fabulous Freebirds and Jerry Lawler.

His famous (and controversial) title unification bout with "The King," which took place at SuperClash III in December 1988, after the jump.

Any Cagesiders out there old enough to remember his run through the 80's?
