Paul Heyman on WWE return: It was just the right place at the right time with the right deal

It was a shock when Brock Lesnar returned to WWE this past April but perhaps even more shocking was the return of his manager, Paul Heyman. How did that come about?

CM Punk is a Paul Heyman guy. I'm a Paul Heyman guy. You're probably a Paul Heyman guy.

Vince McMahon is not a Paul Heyman guy.

Thankfully, that doesn't mean the WWE Chairman won't do business and after some five years away from pro wrestling, Heyman is back in the fold with the company, working on television week in and week out alongside current WWE Champion CM Punk.

It didn't start that way. It started when Brock Lesnar returned and the promotion needed someone to advance angles for him without using up all of the appearances written into his contract, which stipulated a limited number of dates. So Heyman was called in and used as a punching bag leading into Lesnar's match against Triple H at SummerSlam.

Considering the buyrate for that show, I'd say it was a success.

But how did it all happen? Arda Ocal asked Heyman himself what led to his WWE return:

"I'll show you a text from Brock Lesnar: 'We're back in WWE; crazy.' And that's how it is for both of us. I would never have predicted this a year ago. I never would have predicted this eight months ago. And I'm still kind of shell shocked every time I walk in and go, 'holy cow, man, I'm back here.' It was not something that I expected, it was not something that Brock expected. It was just the right place at the right time with the right deal and the right components and it was just the right moment in time. The whole promotion for SummerSlam was 'The Perfect Storm' and this was really the perfect storm, to bring us both back to the WWE. I still wake up every day very surprised that I'm back."

He also talks about hooking up with CM Punk and whether or not it's more of a personal thing to team up with him (it is) and how that's been going.
