Smackdown, which will air this Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, from Bakersfield, California, was taped last night (Aug. 16), which means spoilers are available if you so fancy.
Let's run down how the show played out (via f4wonline):
Teddy Long and Randy Orton open the show with the latter announcing his intentions to move on from his feud with Christian. So that's finally being done after the big blow off match at SummerSlam. Long agrees and sets up a 20 man battle royal in the main event to determine the next contender to the world heavyweight championship.
Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase hit the ring with talks of a Legacy reunion between the two of them. They cut promos with Rhodes claiming he wants bigger and better things like the heavyweight title instead of the Intercontinental strap and DiBiase starting to say they know Orton's weaknesses.
That is until he gets hit with an RKO.
Long sets up Rhodes vs. Ezekial Jackson in a rematch of last weeks title bout, which Rhodes wins clean.
Promo in the back explains why Alberto Del Rio will be on the show.
Justin Gabriel defeated Tyson Kidd with the 450 splash in a decent match.
Promo from Jinder Mahall and Great Khali to explain their intentions of winning the battle royal later in the night.
Del Rio makes his way out to cut a promo and he's clearly as over as anyone on the show. He eventually challenges anyone to come out and face him and Daniel Bryan answers the call. The angle they play is Bryan claiming ADR is nothing special because of the way he cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase, which was just like everyone before him. Bryan, you see, will do it with honor at next year's WrestleMania.
The two have a long and incredible match with Bryan getting over pretty well and Del Rio coming away with the victory. He continued the assault after getting the pin and Sin Cara ran in to make the save, to a great ovation.
Mark Henry cuts a promo to voice his distaste at having to win a battle royal to earn his title shot.
Kelly Kelly and AJ defeated Natalya and Alicia Fox in yet another forgettable effort from the Diva's.
Orton comes out for commentary for the 20 man battle royal. The participants included:
Sheamus, Zack Ryder, Jinder Mahal, Great Khali, Wade Barrett, Johnny Curtis, Justin Gabriel, Tyson Kidd, Mark Henry, Sin Cara, Yoshi Tatsu, Heath Slater, Ezekiel Jackson, Cody Rhodes, Ted DiBiase, Trent Barreta, Jimmy Uso, Jey Uso and William Regal.
The final four consisted of Wade, Henry, Sheamus and Sin Cara. The winner, as you might expect, was Henry, who last eliminated Sin Cara, who was over huge with the crowd. Henry was booked to look overly strong throughout the match, eliminating multiple participants.
The show closed with a staredown between Orton and Henry, who we now know will meet at Night of Champions. Yippee.
