Smackdown spoilers are up at all the major pro wrestling news sites: f4wonline, PWTorch and prowrestling.net. So what was the onscreen ramifications of Edge's shocking retirement announcement on Raw due to his career ending neck injury? Here's a brief rundown of the major developments from yesterday's Smackdown tapings:
- Teddy Long announced that Alberto Del Rio would not be given the World Heavyweight title on a platter as he wished, instead he would have to defeat the winner of the show's main event Battle Royal at the Extreme Rules PPV on May 1st in a Ladder Match to earn the title. Unsurprisingly Del Rio is taking credit for ending Edge's career.
- Edge vacated the World Heavyweight title in another heartfelt, well received, farewell speech in front of his mother who he hugged to end the segment.
- Fittingly Edge's former tag team partner and best friend Christian won the Battle Royal to be the man to face Del Rio for the vacated title at the next PPV. Edge and Christian celebrated together to close the show.
- After the tapes had stopped rolling, E&C did a five second pose for old times sake. Then the whole Smackdown roster came out and broke character by giving Edge a standing ovation and some of his best friends came into the ring to hug him as his entrance music played. Triple H then came out and hugged him too. They then left him to do one last speech where he thanked everyone in the locker room, including Rey Mysterio, The Undertaker, Kane, Michael Hayes, Vince McMahon, Vickie Guerrero, Lita and Christian.
