Michael Cole Tweets Gay Slur - Faux Apologizes

I'm really not trying to make a thing out of posting newsbits about wrestling celebrities making dim-witted statements and then delivering supercilious apologies; it just keeps happening. Nevertheless, since both Jezebel and TMZ have picked this up, Cageside should probably have something too.

Cole tweeted the one-word slur to Josh Matthews early Saturday. It was quickly taken down and replaced by an obligatory apology:

I apologize to any and all who were offended by my tweet toward young Josh Matthews. It was obviously not meant the way it was taken.

In other words, "Sorry if you PC idiots were offended. My use of the word F***** was clearly not meant to mean F*****!"

He then followed up:

I was not ordered to apologize I said I am sorry because I am. Now can I get back to being a character again please?

Yikes. Well, the word "apologize" is in there so, all better, right? Well, unfortunately the timing for this couldn't be worse. As Keith Harris reported, GLAAD not even two weeks ago reached out to the WWE by requesting that they curb the homophobic innuendo (top babyface John Cena being the primary perpetrator). The WWE responded by joining with GLAAD in creating and promoting an anti-bullying initiative. Part of the official announcement: "WWE takes this issue very seriously, and has already spoken with out talent about these incidents." Cole must have missed it.

Either way, it looks like Cole will be given a blunted version of the Michael Hayes punishment:

WWE has alerted GLAAD to the situation and spoken to Michael Cole about his post. He has removed it and apologized for using hateful language. Michael will be included in the training session being done by GLAAD. WWE takes this very seriously and is against discrimination of any kind based on sexual orientation, gender, race, religion or other.
