It just may be.
Introduced by a rapping John Cena back in 2005, the WWE championship has been using the "spinner" design for six years now. Except it doesn't really fit in the current climate of the company. Hell, it doesn't even fit Cena's character anymore.
Now, it seems high time to either create a new design or go back to a classic look, no different than what Cody Rhodes recently did with the Intercontinental championship. In fact, WWE.com has gone so far as to feature an article in which one of its writers calls for a change.
WWE.com joins the call of the WWE Universe on Facebook and Twitter, pleading for the WWE to abandon the current "Spinner Title" design and return to the pride and tradition radiated by past WWE Titles.
Quotes were included from CM Punk, John Cena and The Miz, who all agree that enough is enough and it's time for a change. I felt Miz had the best reasoning behind making a switch:
"But, I'd agree it needs to look less like a toy and more like a title. I mean, think about it. When football players win the Super Bowl or basketball players win the NBA finals, you'll usually see one of the players sporting a championship from WWE. But, it's always the World Heavyweight Title. It doesn't take that much to figure out why that is."
Indeed, Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers famously had the world heavyweight championship -- the Big Gold Belt -- resting upon his shoulder while he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy following his Super Bowl victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier this year.
He certainly wasn't flaunting a spinner belt.
You may be asking yourself why the switch hasn't been made sooner and the answer is rather simple: merchandise sales. Kids, for whatever reason, fell in love with the spinner design, likely because they love Cena, and when sales are strong enough, there's simply no incentive to make a switch. Quite the opposite, actually.
But eventually that changes, as all things do. And it may finally be time to embrace something new. Or old, as it were.
If, in fact, WWE decides to bring back an old design, which would you prefer? The Winged Eagle design worn by superstars like Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage and Shawn Michaels is popular. Then again, so is the Undisputed championship that Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle traded back and forth in 2003.
And don't forget the oh-so-pretty Attitude Era title. Or even the Smoking Skull design made specially for Stone Cold Steve Austin. After the jump, check out pictures of all of the above and vote in our poll on which one you would want to see make a comeback.
Which do you prefer?
