Today's "That was awesome!" comes courtesy of Cagesider David Hamilton. He suggested the infamous Street Fight at King of the RIng (KOTR) 2001 between Kurt Angle and Shane McMahon.
What's really nuts about this event is that Angle was that this was the third match he wrestled in that evening. He had taken on Christian in the semi-finals of the KOTR tournament and then Edge in the finals, coming up short against the future "Rated R Superstar."
The match with McMahon came about after the Vince Jr. interrupted Angle's gold medal ceremony and then mocked him. The Olympic hero hit the Angle Slam but McMahon would get his revenge a few weeks later, nailing the wrestler with his own patented move.
I don't know where you're from but around these parts, that's reason enough for a fight!
This was towards the tail end of my last sabbatical away from wrestling so I wasn't keeping up with the product as religiously as I normally had been or would be in the future.
But when I hopped online and read that not only did Angle suplex McMahon through a portion of the set made of glass but that he did it once and the glass didn't give, I couldn't wait to see it for myself.
It was more brutal than I imagined. An older version of the "Don't Try This At Home" montage the WWE plays before their DVDs highlighted the spot with Angle chiming in, "I thought Shane might have been knocked out."
We all did, Kurt. It's true, it's damn true.
At the time, I couldn't believe the son of a billionaire would put himself through that punishment. I still can't, to be honest.
I've heard the arguments that it was easier for Shane-O-Mac to come out a handful of times a year and hit those spots than it was for full-time workers who were busting their hump 300 days out of the year. I've also heard the arguments that it unfairly raised the bar for those guys.
And they're right.
But I still can't help but mark out over it.
Thanks again to David for suggesting today's edition!
So what say you, Cagesiders? How awesome was that?
