In a panic booking move reminiscent of the death of WCW, TNA hit the reset button with their World title at tonight's Impact taping by having Rob Van Dam vacate the championship for storyline reasons:
PWTorch.com reveals TNA's future plans regarding the EV2.0 vs. Fortune angle and the TNA Championship. RVD will be in an injury angle at the hands of Abyss this week which will force RVD to vacate his title. A Tournament for the title will begin at the iMPACT tapings tonight to crown a new TNA Champion culminating at the No Surrender PPV.
The obvious questions are why have RVD vacate the title and not have Abyss beat him for it and then injure him and why have RVD drop the title so soon in the first place? He's getting major heat and traction as the Champ so why change the formula before you start getting the results you want and if you want to change the Championship why do it in a way that decreases the value of the title?
Another obvious question is why do that now when you're only halfway through a long term storyline where Kurt Angle beats every wrestler in the official TNA top ten rankings to earn a World title shot? If you wanted the belt off RVD so urgently you could have sped that storyline up, which has been going at a snail's pace. Instead, they've just nonsensically dropped Angle's storyline by putting him in the World title tournament:
From F4WOnline:
TNA is doing a storyline where Rob Van Dam vacated the TNA title due to injuries suffered from the Fortune and friends beat down of him at last night's tapings. They filmed a segment of Van Dam going out in an ambulance and are doing an injury angle.
They will be doing an eight-man tournament that will end on the 9/5 PPV show. Four first round matches will be taped on tonight's show including Kurt Angle vs. Douglas Williams.
To me this is absolutely ridiculous. They take the belt off of AJ to give it to RVD, who was clearly not happy about it:
I definitely didn’t understand it. For the life of me, I couldn’t understand it. I was very surprised that I would lose that title after holding it for so long, and to somebody who has basically been out of wrestling for over a year, and was coming in from WWE. And he should have been tired from wrestling a match before that. It was like I’m not the star I thought I was. I guess I’m just a guy in TNA.
Now they cut the legs out from him after less than 4 months? To book a tourney? No one ever cares about tourney for belts! Just another reason why TNA's going in the crapper.
I think the conniving duo of Tommy Dreamer and Vince Russo may prove to be the Laurel and Hardy of wrestling booking, if this is anything to go by.
