This is kind of a weird one, but it seems relevant for a couple reasons.
One is that WWE keeps marketing the real-life romance between Raw Women’s champ Becky Lynch and Universal champ Seth Rollins. And while it hasn’t been made a part of a storyline so far, it is kayfabe canon. That’s led to speculation Lynch could get involved in Rollins feud with Brock Lesnar at some point (Becky accompanying Seth’s stretcher to the ambulance after Lesnar lit him up with his Money in the Bank briefcase being the first time the relationship was shown on Raw). Some have even suggested she could be the mystery referee when Rollins defends his title against Baron Corbin at Stomping Grounds this Sunday, which could bring her into conflict with Brock should he show up to cash-in.
It’s kind of a stretch, but knowing how savvy Bex can be about making sure her public comments fit her character, this interview from last weekend on the red carpet for the MTV Movie & TV Awards may have been offered with such an angle in mind.
The other reason this is worth discussing is because, while a lot of fans (myself included) don’t want to see Seth & Becky join Miz & Maryse, Rusev & Lana, and Jimmy & Naomi - or worst of all, John & Nikki - as real and storyline couples, the performers themselves seem fine with it. At least at the level it’s being promoted now, Lynch & Rollins have signed on. And if they’re comfortable with it, well, I and other critics will just have to take Batista’s advice and deal with it.
Which is a lot of set-up just to get to this.
Hollywood Life ran an “exclusive interview” with Raw’s power couple after the MTV Movie & TV Awards. That consisted of less than 20 words worth of quotes from the pair, all of them in response to being asked about this:
When I found you, I found me.
— Seth Rollins (@WWERollins) June 14, 2019
The site says Rollins confirmed the tweet was about Becky, and then said, “Oh yeah! People can look into it any way they want,” while looking at his special lady friend. Lynch told them they’re excited to see where their romance takes them, and “I think we are stronger together anyways.”
That’s it.
That a gossip/lifestyle outlet saw this as a scoop is a sign WWE is right, and there is a market for a new wrestling couple. Will they be tempted to use that to spice up Raw, and see if it improves ratings?
What do you think?
Lynch & Rollins certainly haven’t said anything publicly about their real romance that wouldn’t work as part of their kayfabe one.
Stay tuned.
